1. Go for Barossa Valley and Adelaide, the City of Churches (or city of pubs, as many of them are now..)

I'll be down in Melbourne from Canberra around New Years but you've probably moved on by then. Send a message if you make it to the nations capital. Not much to see here though..

  2. Hi all,

Developed my first roll of B&W film last night and got them scanned at the local

photo place. Posting two of the photos here.

They appear to me to have very high contrast, black blacks and very white

highlights (particularly the first photo). I'm not sure if I've overdeveloped

the film or if there's anything else that could be done to reduce contrast.

    Overexposed?

    Or overdeveloped?

Or are they fine? I'm not entirely sure.

The shots were taken on HP5+ film and developed in DD-X for 9 mins at 20 degrees

Centigrade with agitation (4 inverts) every minute.

    Thanks for any advice!

  3. Want to order the Domke 1" gripper strap for a Leica MP, but I'm unsure as to

whether I should get the basic one or the one with swivel and quick release.

Unfortunately there are no shops here who stock them so I'd really appreciate if

somebody would let me know what the difference is, and what the advantage of

having the one with the swivel is.

    Thanks

  4. My suggestion would be to get the wide-angle lens. You'll probably enjoy it more being a zoom lens, and it will allow you to take environmental portraits as well where the surroundings are included.

I personally thought the tamron 90mm macro was too sharp for portraits, showing every cosmetic flaw brilliantly, but with digital I guess you could always fix that up in photoshop. It's a good macro lens though.

If you want a nice portrait lens only, I'd suggest getting a used 105mm Ai-S f2.5 Nikkor ($286 from www.keh.com), which is a fantastic portrait lens. I'm not sure if the D50 can meter with Ai-S lenses, but I guess you could always use the LCD to get an idea of metering.

  5. Hi Dan,

I just purchased a Nikon 300mm f4 IF-ED from KEH.com in "Excellent condition" for less than $500. They've got several others in Excellent condition available for around that price. I've seen them go on evilbay for $600-700, and there you never know what you'll end up with.

  6. Zach:

In that case I would follow Jeff's advice. Insure your camera gear and have fun with it while you're there! Your host family should be able to look after you and give you plenty of advice. You should be fluent in swahili by the time you come back :)

    Have fun!
