I have experienced exactly the same problem with my EF100-400 4.5-5.6 IS. I have used the lens on a number of occasions with a 10D body but have rarely used it in AI Servo mode. The first time it happened the IS was ?ON? as well as the ?AI-SERVO? and my MKII body just froze, displaying a message 0.0. When I turned the camera off and then back on it changed to ?err.01?. Cleaning the contacts did not fix the problem. Removing the lens and attaching it back seemed to help temporarily but whenever I used the servo the same thing would happen again. It started occurring every time I turned on the camera. I tried it with a 300D body and an Elan body as well but the same thing would happen after just a couple of shots have been taken. So I figured the lens was faulty. I had to send it back to CANON and am still waiting to hear back from them. Really disappointing but? My guess is that it that has to do with a combination of factors ?AI Servo and IS seem to interfere somehow.
