Ha, faced the same question in years past. On one cruise, I took my 24-105 and the 17-40 but missed having something longer. Last cruise, I ended up buying a Canon SX50, 12mp and has an effective optical zoom of close to 1200mm! Didn't miss a thing and was able to carry it everywhere (tours of the Acropolis, etc.) Far lighter than a 7D and two L series lenses. Only thing extra might be a monopod and case for the camera.

Interesting question. I looked at the 100-400 as well. Just found it
too dark and unwieldy. Ended up with the same combination you mention
- 300 f4 and a 1.4 Canon extender. Focus is very fast too. I also use
a 70-200 f2.8 with the 1.4x and it works well.

Sold my A2E last year after only having it for a couple of months.
Didn't like the fact there was no vertical AF and it was noticably
slower than my Elan IIe I thought.

Having said that, I have been thinking the same thing - trading
(selling) my Elan IIe QD for a 7E for the quieter/faster focusing and
for the additional (7 vs. 3) eye control focus points. But having said
*that*, if I only had the Elan IIe (and I have an EOS 3 as well), then
I would keep the Elan and get the 7E as a second body as someone else
already suggested.

I've always had two bodies when doing sports shots: one with a faster
film than the other... use the 100 film for close-ups and the 400/800
for longer/moving shots.

I love reading these debates... <grin>.

Couple of years ago, I was looking for an EOS 3 and called some of
those favorite shops up in NYC that advertise unbelievably low prices.
Yes, I got the song and dance about "do you want the Japanese version
or the ones Canon assembles in Malaysia out of plastic"? And this was
also the same tripe when looking for a Canon 100-300 zoom later (which
I ended up purchasing from CameraWorld). So, I called Canon USA in Los
Angeles and asked. Their response was interesting. For those who were
never really sure, Canon makes all lens (all lens, to repeat) the same
everywhere, as far as quality goes. Yes, there are slight variations
between country models, especially in cameras (Japan generally gets
neat features we don't).
The other fascinating comment was, the 'official' at Canon said they
would honor a warranty in the US if a valid purchase invoice showing a
US based company and the lens/camera description was provided. So, my
understanding was, buy an import from B&H, Adorama, etc. and use the
invoice as proof of purchase within the 1 year time frame.

Haven't had to try this so far. All my Canon's seem to wait many, many
years before they need service! And my L lens are kind of off-white
beige... wonder if that means that weren't meant for use here in America?!

Agreed with the 24-85mm Canon. Nice range. The Tamron 28-200 is a nice
lens, however it and others (which I no longer own) are definitely
*loud* focusing, especially when compared to a USM from Canon.
Which Lens to bring on W.Caribbean cruise from NOLA
