  1. Gents, I note a bit of sarcasm to this question. I am looking for the point where a semipro may need to consider going to the Medium Format system and the 645 or 67 format to really replace film and get a quality large format print.

I'm currently using the D-200 and I read that the D-300 sensor may be at the limit of the pixel size, so assuming that the same spacing (about 180 pixel/mm) on a full size chip (24x36mm) may get 27,993,600 pixels on the chip. So, as Dave sugests, the real pixel count may be only 60% or 16,796,160. Interesting that this is about the best resolution of a 35mm film output.

I agree that the Pixel count reported by manufactures is a real issue and having to use 4 pixels needed by de-mosaic for the Bayer sensor to create a accurate color pixel. As for the Foveon chip the actual pixel count is one layer not 3X. So is the actual pixel count really on 1/4 of that used by the manufactures for the Beyer sensor?

  2. Considering the current adds about the bigger pixels and adding the combined

effect of lens and sensor capabilities does anyone have a clue as to the maximum

pixel count for a 35mm system? Effective resolution of the EOS 1Ds Cannon is

approximately 21.1 million pixels (total pixels: approximately 21.9 million)

while the medium format back is a 48 by 36mm sensor with about the same pixel

count. Prior discussion say that the Medium Format is better. Both can produce

a 13 by 19 print without extrapolation. Then there is the Foveon chip, that if

it works, may increase the effective pixel count for the 35mm system in the future.

  3. I'M NEW TO THE SYSTEM AND LOADED UP MY SITE THIS WEEK AND PUT SOME VERY GOOD PICTURES UP FOR EVALUATION. WHEN I GET GREAT COMMENTS AND HIGH SCORE THAT ARE DILUTED BY SOMEONE'S 1'S AND 2'S ON GREAT PICTURES I WOUNDER WHAT SYSTEM THEY ARE USING. THE RESULT IS LOWERING MY SCORES ON BETTER THAT AVERAGE PICTURES TO A POINT THAT I KNOW WHAT IS A GOOD PICTURE AND SOMEONE IS JUST MESSING WITH THE PROGRAM. IT IS JUST LIKE SPAM, ADWARE, SPYWARE, AND VIRUSES SCREWING UP A GOOD THING. SINCE ALL OUR SCORES ARE RECORDED AND TALLIED IT WOULD BE EASY TO TRACK THE NUT CASES AND BAN THEM FROM THE SYSTEM. WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?
  4. I have been a Nikon D-100 user for about a year now and have found that the 35mm format may be the digitial format of choise. The current 6 meg chip will go to 14 meg at full size (24 by 36 mm). If the three layer chips works out, we will have about a 128 megapixel file (128 pix/mm) and give you about a 36 by 42 inch picture at 300 dpi. The increase in output with smaller pixels, three layer technology and full 35 mm size chip, we will have about 212 megapixels and be able to produce a 40 by 60 inch picture at 300 dpi. This is within the relm of current technology.

So, as I see things a 35 mm full frame digital will give a quality large formant print equal to or better that medium format film in not to distant future.

With the cost of the larger chip to make a medium format digital at 6 cm by 4.5 cm, 6 cm or 7 cm medium format digitals will be out of the price range of most users. I'm betting on the 35 mm format will win the day for most of us.
