1.
Kate, I am presently using D80 with 18-200 VR lens. its very handy and good lens. The advantages are: you can always keep it attached with the body which reduces dust problems, its a very good range and will be quite adequate for portraits; Its a short zoom lens and handy; You can have fantastic landscape shots. The disadvantages are: in the widest part, there is a bit of barelling if you are taking a very big structure as in architecture photography from close quarters, image quality may not be as good as 18-55 + 70-200 combo. For travelling and general photography 18-200 satisfies all your needs.

  2.
Thanks everybody,
Thanks a lot for contributing. My confidence is certainly restored on a brand which wont compromise. In todays world nobody takes a chance by cost cutting in terms of quality; business is mainly done with an honest quality control expecially in electronic hardware. Poor quality can lead to disaster, as customers will have the last say, grapevine regarding poor quality can destroy a company within a short time.
Practically I have not seen any difference. But those old war horses still think the Nikon N and F series were a tard different in the predigital era.

  3.
Edward,
I believe in every word you wrote.
Luca,
Thats your way of thinking, I think its their baby. I dont think anybody differentiates between siblings. Putting third grade workers for a D60 and top class technicians for a D3 sounds interesting but dificult to accept. After all its just assembling.
Nobody is answering me whether Canon makes it in Japan purely and Nikon makes it all over the place?

  4.
Dear All,
Recently my friend asked me an annoying question. I am a bit disturbed by it. Canon and Nikon the most reputed in DSLR business has different plants in Japan, China, Thailand and Malaysia. Consumers have a feeling of insecurity that those manufactured in places other than Japan are inferior. People even mention that the pricing is almost 20% lower, are flimsy in construction, etc etc. Internet search on this issue is a real killer. My friend who has a Canon, is confident on Made in Japan mark; mine is a Nikon and shows made in Thailand mark. Everyone is confident of quality control in Japanese plants, but what about other plants? Is it cost cutting only in labour costs or they are compromising in manufacturing quality; Lets have a debate on this issue. Should I believe on the brand and overlook the place of manufacture or start doubing it again. Frankly, I dont find any flaw with my system and its functioning wonderfully well.

  5.
I want to know when you buy a new Li battery for your camera, what is the way of increasing the life, do you use it to discharge completely first and then charge? and if you charge first time, how long should we charge?

  6.
Thanks Bill,
Your guess is as good as mine. But I think these companies cannot do tradeoff of image quality with newer "fuel efficient" sensors like CMOS. Maybe the newly developed CMOS sensor in the latest Canon and Nikon cameras are different than the first generation ones?
Thanks

  7.
Dear Matt,
I think your D300 score a poin in higher ISOs I agree, but you cant say that regarding sharpness in lower ISOs, I find the pictures marginally better. Only problem is that D200 had some technical problems for which it is withdrawn from the market.
Dear Weinberg,
The switch from CCD to CMOS is entirely due to cost cutting by the companies. Canon initiated it and Nikon followed suit. Off course you benefit with increased battery life in CMOS compared to CCD.

  8.
Hi Technical bugs,
I want to know whether the CMOS sensor is equally efficient as a CCD sensor?
A brillinat photographer told me that CMOS is cheaper to make than CCD and everybody is switching to CMOS. But if you see like the slightly earlir generation cameras like Nikon D200 gave comparatively better pictures than the newer D300. Is it due to the change of CCD sensor to CMOS?
Please see the attached link:
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question362.htm
Can somebody enlighten me on this?
Lets see if now your minds are ignited or not?
Thanks,
Rajnish

  9.
Whatever you say D200 is the first of the classy ones the world has seen. Just go through the images with this camera and you will know. D200 is altogether a different class. I have seen images by all the Nikon DSLRs and D200 is simply fantastic, no matter how much upgrades you do it can improve only very very negligibly for us to perceive.
Nothings like it although Nikon has discontinued as they are promoting D300 and D700 now.

Dear andrew, can you pleae tell me more about this particular lens Nikon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX.
You mean to say that this lens is no good in comparison to having the twin lens system like 18-55 and 55-200. But this is claimed to be a very good lens!!!

  10.
I think recession is not affecting the camera market. Even if they are not saling any big deals recently they are not reducing the prices; at least in Europe. If you see the trend in PMA 2009 in Vegas you know that these are all marketing strategies. The loser is always the customer, recession or not ;-)

    D60

Is it true that Nikon D60 DSLR cannot take this lens?
Nikon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX
I was told in a shop. So I was thinking whether to go for ahigher priced D80 or D90!! in which he suggested that the lens will go.
Please reply.

  11.
Thanks Mike Bisom,
I am happy with the insightful way of approaching my dilemma. Your comments have truly been revealing to say the least. It has given me food for my hungry soul. Thanks a lot for clarifying all those points.
Lets start shooting ;-)
Warm regards,
12.
Thanks Bob, for a straight answer, but I dont care much about the video function. what is your opinion about majority of people telling about softer images by Canon and more sharper by Nikon. What about the unnatural green of Canon? Is it really so? But then both od these have fine, superfine and normal views...
Warm regards,
RD

  13.
Hi fellow photographers,
I am interested to buy a good DSLR. My budget holds it to certain extent and I can afford either a Canon 50D or a Nikon D90 or D300.
Please tell me the adbantages of Canon over Nikon.
I used to Film SLR long back, but switched to autofocus SLR like recently. I am happy with Fuji7000s and gav me good results. But I want to be a bit more than amateur, but just about semi-pro DSLR use.
Can you all guide me which one to use and which gives better picture quality, the reviews give contradictory statements.
Thanks,
Rajnish

  14.
Dear Mike,
Thanks for putting D300 here, now I understand its importance, as now the prices of D300 is coming low, but I cant take it that D300 has weather sealing!! Even D700 has doubtful sealing for bad weather??
Regarding others opinions, I did a few research and found out the same thing, Pentax has lot of limitations as far as lenses are considered and also lack of a real resale value;
But when do you expect a new Nikon DSLR model? If its coming soon, better wait for sometime??
I was given insight regarding the Canon ASM lenses, but Nikon doesn´t have them right??
Thanks for keeping the thread open. I am still keeping my options open.
Regards,
Rajnish

  15.
wow,
steven moseley,
u have taken the discussion to another level. i dont much about it, but thanks for enlightening, i will have a more open mind now, let me research abit, thanks a lot, lol,
rd

  16.
Thanks Shun and Andrew for correcting my D before N or after c ;-) sorry for the slip off.
Thanks Ferd for yr straightforward opinion, I want to be a bit more than an amateur!
Ross, your point on lack of weather sealing is affecting me, I was a litle bit biased towards Nikon D50 over Canon 50D; what about the magnesium body in canon, does Nikon also have it?
Mike Bisom, I take your points on purchasing a slower speed for a better focus result, my budget is already stretching, so I cant afford a Nikon D300. I know its a very good one. But D700 is the ultimate one.
Shuo Zhao, I think you have let the cat out of the bag, it may mean that Canon 50D is comparable to Nikon D90 you mean?

  17.
Dear photographers,
I am interested to buy a DSLR and confused between Canon and Nikon. I am interested to buy either Canon D50 or Nikon D90. In either case trying with 18-200 lens.
Can you all please tell me about which is a better buy? And why?
LOL,
Thanks,
Rajnish

  18. Its a great camera, no doubt,

I switched to Digital after 10 years of Manual SLRs.

I like the color reproductions, macromode, manual mode with B shots, all do terrific well, at least my kinda subjects. I bought it in India, but the only problem is the fast back up to power saving mode and thats pretty irritating for action photoghraphers. U can go through my portfolio of "Sunsets" shot in Kerala, India.
009Mtb-19468384.thumb.jpg.132894d00023e51387ad04dae9b81747.jpg
