  1. FWIW I have sold two items on photo.net to date. Based on this limited experience my preference is to post it on photo.net with your best price. Then, if you don't get your price after 2-4 weeks (you decide how long to wait), you can try to auction it on ebay. You might get less exposure here but you are far less likely to encounter a buyer who is a scammer or a non-payer here than on e-bay. Also, buyers on this site are more likely to trust a seller's description than on e-bay where too many people have heard of untrustworthy sellers.
  2. New Ai software seems to have effectively addressed the most serious bug in the previous versions. At this time comparisons and performance tests are doubtless underway by more competent evaluators than I. My hope is that for large format negs the M1 could be the real deal at a price affordable to many.

  3. Silverfast has responded to my request for tech-support and I am in the process of getting back to them now (I'm an amateur at photography and scanning and I work full-time so it may take me a few more days for me to do this--meanwhile I will enjoy the feeling I have that I am a beta-tester for Microtek and Silverfast).

RE: My initial experience with the M1 using Ai Studio: 35mm holder holds film quite flat. 6cm strip holder is ok but not as good. Haven't tried 4x5 yet. Problems: banding or drop-out columns can be viewed at http://www.silverfast.com/forum/new-m1-scanner-problem-with-ai-t5101.html i.e. my results are similar at times but usually I have just one or two bands and there is no image information visible within the bands. My initial impression that these phenomena are more likely at higher res settings seems valid but not 100% reliable i.e. they are intermittent even when all settings and the frame+focus+film are unchanged between scans with only the resolution between the scans changed from 2400 to 4800 to 9600. Also, I get color fringes (pink and purple) obvious at long straight edges in color scans e.g. rooflines in an image. I have not yet explored many of the scan options so I won't comment on multi-sample, HDR, in-scanner filters etc. at this time. I believe that once the software issues are resolved and the scanner tests out as healthy and to manufacturer's specs that Ted Harris's opinion in VIEW CAMERA will hold true for B&W scans. Color scanning may remain a separate challenge however.

Overall, I have no buyer remorse and that "for the money" the M1 is likely a good buy for most people who are looking for a step up from an Epson 700/750 or even a Leaf 45. The Imacons may remain a significant step above in quality and 10 to 12 steps up in price.

  6. Hi,

I tend to agree with Barry's report but I'm also experiencing what Roger is reporting i.e. "banding" or drop-out columns despite updating Ai Studio to 6.5.5r4. Seems more likely with higher res scans (2000dpi and above). Has been a problem regardless of color, bw, or bit depth. Has not happened with Scanwizard at higher res settings although the higher res scans with Scanwizard are quite poor for other reasons I don't have time to go into just now. Just sent e-mail this morning to Silverfast tech support about this. Has anyone gotten an opinion from them? from Microtek?

    Thanks,

  7. Bill-

I probably will end up going to a machine shop near me. Meanwhile the plot thickens i.e. if I leave the original back attached to the rear standard and unscrew the spring steel so that the ground glass frame is off then the "22" roll film holder fits quite neatly and just needs something like clips above and below to hold it in place. Same clips could serve to hold the ground glass in place so that it is easily removed to insert the film holder after focusing. I still would do some tests of the focus accuracy as the roll film and ground glass may not be the same distance from the front standard. There's a nearby machine shop I've used to make negative carriers for a scanner which does good precision machining and for reasonable prices (it's right next to an Air Force base).

    Thanks again,

  8. Bill--Once I put the original back on the GV again (took it off to explore the possibilities) I will do as you say. Sounds simple if the kit you mention works a GVI as it does for a GVII.

Dan & Jeff--If I can't get the Graflok back I have (I'm not sure which camera it came off of or was meant for originally) doen't easily attach I will do as you recommend.

Thank you all. It's a pleasure for a LF newbie amateur like me to get advice from the pros and semi-pros on this forum.

  9. Hi,

Removing the back from the GV so that the Graflok frame can be placed against the rear standard of the GV reveals that the Graflok might be attached if 4-6 screwholes were drilled and tapped into the GV but the Graflok frame is larger than the GV rear and would interfere with tilts of the rear standard. Can this be be made to work? Is it worth a try?

    Thanks,

  10. Ed-

I've had my M1 Pro a few days now and while my initial reaction is that it's likely to prove a step up from the 1800f, and perhaps the V750 as well, (I'm depending on other people's preliminary reports for much of this comparison) it appears that there are several bugs in Silverfast Ai Studio which will need to be worked out. I will post specifics about these bugs once I have done more systematic scanning.

    Best regards and happy scanning,
