I have owned this lens for about two years now. Used mainly for Bird Photography with EOS50 ( Elan II). Recently added a 1.4X II extender. I normally compare the results of 100-400 with my 100mm macro which I use for Butterfly photography. I have nothing to complain about the results. Its great for birds' in-flight shots because of IS function.Though it is a fact that most of the time the lens is used at 400mm setting and this makes me wonder if I should have purchased a 400mm fixed . But I know when I travel in the tiger country on the elephant back I can easily pull back to 300 or 200mm if tigers/elephants come too close as they normally do in Ranthambor. Used with EOS 3, centre focussing point still maintains the AF even with 1.4X. Much depends on your specific requirements and future plans. Hope this helps.

I know from the archives that many users faced this problem of
plastic back latch (on the body not on back cover) breaking on the
EOS 50 ( Elan II). I also gathered from the posts that it is easily
replaceable for anything from $3 to $150.Unfortunately here in India
Canon service is not responding to my mails and I am in possession of
the broken piece - lug that broke off while the camera was still in
the bag - is it possible to repair it using epoxy adhesive
(Araldite)? Has anyone done that before? If that is a possibility
then I would like to know:
1. Other than two tiny screws at the side, is there anything I have
to open? ( I have never opened the camera before)
2. Is there any electric contact to be soldered? ( The film
transport is activated the moment you shut the back)
3. Any exploded view of this portion available? ( I could find on the
net Parts Catalog for Elan 7 but not for this camera).
4.If anyone is aware of the location of the online Service Manual
then it woulg be a great help. Thanks .
