    I think a fair competition will help motivate people to improve their ability. Totaly ignoring the rating system would be a pity, mostly it's the only feedback you get. I would almost suggest to let people only rate a certain person once a week, what sometimes bothers me is that their are small subcommunities (which also have offcourse positive effects). I see a lot of "great" photographers (according to the rating system), who never comment on photos of the low rated poeple, those who need help.
