1.
Thanks to all who replied.
Charles - I looked at Adoramapix but it looks like all they support are photo books (i.e., limited text beyond photo captions). Perhaps I missed something?

Monica - I have a pc (sigh). Thanks for the suggestion of InDesign - I knew that blurb.com provided the option to print a pdf from InDesign and it's good to hear that the results are better than with blurb's template (I printed a photo book from them and was only marginally impressed).

Andrew - good thoughts on OpenOffice; I hadn't considered that as an option. I am using MS Word currently as I draft the book, but it frustrates me to no end and I had not even considered a word processing program.

Thanks again to all,
2.
I am looking to assemble and print a book that contains photos together with long sections of running text (think of a novel with photos). I am familiar with blurb.com and like their book templates. However, while you can paste text into their templates it is very difficult to edit the text and thus I've found it cumbersome to use.
Does anyone know of a program/on-line resource for creating a text/photo book that has the following features:
i) templates for book design
ii) easy text editing/formatting
iii) reasonably high quality binding, paper, etc
I am sure the uber-expensive programs like Quark can do this but in addition to preferring a lower cost option I'd prefer a program that doesn't have such a steep learning curve.

Any ideas?
Thanks!
