1.
Thanks for the reply Bob. Good suggestion. Opened up one of my recent RAW files in DPP, and sure enough, it contained the correct serial number. I guess this would point to the issue being the software.
Thanks, hadn't thought of that.
Now to figure out what's going on with Aperture that it's displaying the wrong serial #..

 2.
I just noticed that beginning sometime in February '10, Apple's Aperture has been arbitrarily recording two different serial numbers for one of my cameras bodies (5D MKI) in the EXIF data (one being the correct serial number, the other being a completely different number beginning with a negative sign in front of it).

I had the camera serviced by Canon back in January to fix a faulty USB connector. I never noticed anything different about my camera, but i'm wondering if it's possible Canon swapped out the camera and didnt tell me? Although even that does not make sense, b/c since then, aperture still recorded the correct serial number on subsequent shoots (albeit arbitrarily). It does seem for the past 6 months or so it has mostly recorded the incorrect one. Any ideas?

The last time the correct serial number was recorded was 7/13/10, all photos since then contain the incorrect number. Strangely, photos from February-July is an arbitrary mix of the 2. Very confusing.

I'm curious if this is an Aperture (software) issue, or a possible issue with the camera firmware. AFAIK I am on the latest/greatest camera firmware. I googled but havent seen anyone with any similar issues, so wondering if anyone has seen anything like this?

 3.
ahh yes, actually did some more research and saw the painted canvas option...
I guess my curiosity is in how it lays...muslin is too soft and therefore easily susceptible to wrinkling as a result of movement..is there a significant difference in the textures/weight of painted canvas vs. muslin?

 4.
can someone tell me if there is a seamless paper that mimics the muslin cloudy gray backgound seen in the photos in the link below?
http://fashiongonerogue.com/valerija-kelava-lachlan-bailey-vogue-china-november-2010/#more-38805
at first glance it appears the photos are seamless, and they very well may be, but I can't seem to find it (at least online) at adorama. i've shot with all types of greys, but would like to experiment with some of this more textured grey as opposed to the flat greys..but i still want the neatness of seamless if possible..
thanks in advance

 5.
Has anyone had any success controlling an external flash (specifically the 580ex II) through the camera's menu settings? When I mount the speedlite to the G11, the Flash Control option goes gray, as does the flash exposure compensation menu, however the Canon website states:

"The PowerShot G11 is compatible with the Speedlite flash series intended for all EOS series SLR cameras. Attach a Speedlite flash to the hot shoe, then you can set and control the flash on the "Flash Control" menu in the camera. With a Speedlight, the G11 is given extra functions such as autoflash metering, FE lock and Flash exposure compensation; continuous shooting with external flash."

If anyone has had any luck with this setup i'd love to know how.

Thanks in advance.

 6.
thanks all for the suggestions. unfortunately, as John Markanich suggests its probably time for a trip to the camera repair shop.. i've tried the screw extractor method, (first drilling a pilot head, then tapping in a reverse threaded screw and screwing counterclockwise) and as you can see from the picture below, unfortunately after drilling all the way through the broken piece, I have still been unable to get the piece lose/dislodged. It seems to be in there pretty snugly...
i also tried a small flat-head screwdriver, but that was not successful either. I called canon, and they said they would be able to supply the part, however it would not come with a schematic for installation, and im not sure i feel too confident ripping apart my battery grip.
Also went to Phototech repair shop in NYC (across from B&H), and they said they needed to order a new socket, and it would be a few days, and a $60/charge. I'm quite sure if I take it to Canon the repair will be cheaper, plus a quicker turnaround.

 7.
I'm sure that's true Peter, but for both the short and long haul, i'd really like to know if this is a user replaceable part, and if anyone has done it. Of course with a little more patience i'll find out in just under 9 hours, but If i can get a definite yes from someone that has done it, i'd probably be more likely to hop on the road at 7 so I can be at Canon at 8am or shortly thereafter to pick up a replacement socket.
I know the grip isnt responsible for my photography, but I consider it a dear friend at this point. :)

 8.
i've had the camera for 2.5 years, and have never used it without the grip. my hands are big(ger), and ergonomically the grip is much more comfortable for me, so using it without is not really an option. Especially on a paying job with a new client.
Might be halfway psychological, but I see myself driving down to Jamesburg, NJ from Brooklyn at 8am in the morning before I see myself going into this shoot without the battery grip.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

 9.
Today I ruined my tripod socket on my battery grip (BG-E4). 1/2 a piece of an adapter broke off while tightening the camera onto a clamp, and it is now lodged halfway into the battery grip socket. i've tried to get it out using the Pilot Hole/Screw Extractor method, but alas no success. Has anyone ever had this piece replaced? I was hoping when I unscrewed the small plate on the bottom of the battery grip it would reveal a completely replaceable plate/socket combo, but alas the socket was still there.
I need the grip for another client shoot tomorrow afternoon, so i'm contemplating driving to jersey first thing in the morning to see If they have a replacement socket, but i'm curious if this is user replaceable?
any help will be much appreciated.
thanks
10.
I actually remembered that I have an old RC-1 from my film days, so I pulled it out..and I have been unable as of yet to get it working with the 5D...I installed new batteries and confirmed the remote is not the issue as it still works with my film body.
Anny suggestions?

 11.
Thanks Michael.

Buffdr I have 2 pocket wizards..I wasnt aware I can use them to trigger my camera. I'll scroll and look for the post you referred to. (of course, since i'm shooting using strobes, and one of the PW's is on the camera and the other on the strobe i'm assuming i'd need a 3rd for wireless triggering..sounds like the RC5 might be the best option).

 12.
Can anyone recommend a good wireless remote for the Canon 5D? I did a serach, and i'm aware of the RC5 and RC1, but based on my research (which could be wrong) they have to be used through the camera's timer setting rather than being instantaneous shutter release mechanisms..I also use a 40D as a backup so extra compatibility would be preferred.
thanks

 13.
I'll add my own experience as well. I dropped my 5D off at the Canon repair center in NJ on Wednesday 1/13. I managed to somehow break the tethering/USB connection, so the computer would no longer recognize my camera, which is a big deal for me as far as tethering is concerned since I shoot fashion and usually have a full team at my shoots all interested in immediate results.
First, the rep asked how many L lenses and camera bodies I owned, and once I disclosed he suggested I become a Silver member of the Canon Professional Services network which qualifies you for 20% off any and all service. He then applied the discount prior to me even joining up, since I had to go home and do it online. I was told the repair would take 3-5 business days, and that I could possibly pick up my unit on Friday 1/15, but more likely Tuesday 1/19 (due to the MLK holiday on Monday). Unfortunately I didn't get a call on Friday that my unit was ready, but today I received a phone call first thing this morning that my unit was set for pickup. They turned it around in essentially 2 days since I dropped it off Wednesday afternoon. I have nothing but great things to say about their service. The best customer service experience I have a had in a long time.
On a separate note, I also received my membership card for CPS today via FedEx too, which I highly recommend to everyone.

 14.
eek. Thanks for your insight Bob. I guess 200 is better than springing 2600 for a new camera. I need to be able to shoot tethered. Thanks Bob.
As a follow up, is an authorized service center just as good as sending to canon? Since i'm in NYC, there are authorized repair shops near, and if I can save on time by eliminating shipping to and fro, i'd like to take advantage of it.

 15.
I think, no I'm pretty sure I have a bad/damaged usb port on my 5D. Was doing some tethered shooting, must have leaned on the camera/usb cable connection awkwardly, because now the camera is not recognized via USB at all. Is it even possible to have the usb port repaired/replaced by an authorized service dealer, and if so, is this going to be really costly? I know its the port because the cable works fine when i tether my backup 40D..only having issues with the 5D at this point.
yikes.

 16.
Hoping someone can help me out. I shoot women's fashion, a lot in studio, but some location stuff as well..i'm looking to experiment with some different PS techniques to add a different feel to my work...so i've been thinking a lot about compositing, specifically layering images from the same shoot to create the effect of motion/dreaminess....i've been experimenting on my own with modest results, so i'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good tutorial or book that can help me out?
thanks in advance...
