1.
My wife just began a 3 week trip to Italy. Her back up drive (Wolverine) was damaged in transit. If she can find a replacement will it work with her equipment she purchased in the US? Specifically Canon formatted CF cards. If I were to buy a dvd in Europe it would not function on my dvd player at home. Different zone.

Thanks.

  2.
Noticed a bright edge in all frames when using a 400L 5.6 lens. Tried a different lens - 17-40L - no bright edge. Back to the 400 and the bright edge shows up again. Any ideas what's causing it. It's a new feature - was not there last time I used the lens. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks.
1DsIII
400L 5.6

  3.
Be sure to test you filter before you go. Purchased a Tiffen this past fall - shots kept coming back soft until I traced it to the CPL.
I know you didn't ask but...Things to do if its too windy (lifts can be closed due to wind)
Many moose can be seen along Gros Ventre Rd, eat at the Gun Barrel, herds of elk at the refuge, beer at Snake River Brew Pub, David Brookover Gallery, Black Tail Ponds, extra battery, sorry I got carried away. Have fun.

  4.
Hi John,
Spots around north Florida to check out -
Black Rock Trail on Big Talbot Island - little Talbot has the beach and park - but Big Talbot is great to see as well - its a short walk from the road or parking lot.
Town of Fernandina and harbor area. No lobster - lots of shrimp.
Fort Clinch - Fernandina
Okefenokee Swamp - you can rent small motorized boats for the day and cruise the swamp - great time of year for it.
Have a good trip.

  5.
The Biltmore can be busy, especially during fall color. Tickets can be purchased in advance, which can save you time getting thru the gate and gate parking lot. Reservations can be made for the "Home tour". I think I'm correct in stating you cannot get in without some kind of pass in the early morning - you could however stay the night and already be inside at first light. You can hang around the gardens and grounds until twilight. Get a map of the grounds as you come in - or find one to download. The roads are mostly 'one-way', so if you pass something and want to head back its a pain. Have fun, great time to be in the mountains.

  6.
I've had a LowePro Nature Trekker for about 5 or 6 years. I carry it everyday. It has held up quite well. I had a zipper start to fail in recent months. Contacted Lowepro to see if they would fix it - they said it was normal wear and tear. Fair enough. I'd probably still buy the same bag again. Will fit in overhead on the larger planes. On the smaller ones I always gate check. Only issue I have would be the waist strap - wish it was removable.

  7.
I've traveled less on Blowing Rock side so I tend to prefer the 105 perspective. Decent views from Foscoe, has a good profile view. Possibly up on Hawks Nest Ski Resort area. The resort would be gated and closed this time of year. Grandfather often has lenticular clouds around the peak. If my terminology is incorrect I apologize - not a meteorologist. Memorial weekend 09 - the cougar at Grandfather was unavailable while the enclosure was being remodeled. The bears were ok, the otters were better, good access to the eagles, didn't look at the deer. Same weekend the view from the top was in the fog.
As for barns, buildings, etc. Get off the main roads - Matney (NE of Banner Elk). Covered bridge in Foscoe at Sleepy Hollow road - on left when heading toward Sugar. Old Beech Mtn road. Take Sam Eller rd to Old Beech Mtn to Buckeye back to 421. You'll come back into Boone from the west. Another decent loop - Shulls Mill over to 105 take a left or SE to the gas station at Church Rd - follow it back to Holloway mtn road and back over to the parkway and back into Blowing rock. Mast store and Annex in Valley Crucis.
All roads mentioned you can do in a car minus winter weather. Using a garmin I've really tried to get lost but it always showed me the way home.
I lived in Boone area for 3 years - my mother was there for 12. I wandered the roads alot and never had any issues with anyone. If something was posted or I wanted to go on their property I knocked on the door - most were happy to help. Have fun.

  8.
Paul,
I used SV lights for several years shooting table top for department store catalogs. Worked well enough. The equipment eventually wore out and I moved on. Still using hot lights for table top or flash when needed. The lighting should be chosen according to your needs. I think it could be a good economical place to start DEPENDING on the type of studio work your doing. Weddings....not my bag.

  9. Denis,

    Purchased a 20D last October and a Hoya72R for infrared. The 20D didn't work so well. I

tried exposures up to 2-3 minutes, very muddy. So, I found a Sony F828, same filter.

Works great. Tried it on the "night shot" mode. At lowest ISO (64), a polarizer, 2 NDs and

the 72R, still too bright in full sun, works well in the shade. However, in manual mode plus

sepia I get good shots. Hot spot will show if I go any higher than F4.0. Hot spot also

seems to relate to angle of the sun, even with a hood. I know these aren't the same camera

models you asked about but maybe this helps.

    Randy
