Well, the photo is yours.  And the photo reflects the degree you master your camera and technique of photo taking.  Anyway, a poor photo is still a poor photo.

I saw photos of this location many times and found the same problem.  The lightest part in upper right shows no details whereas various parts are completely dark.  The beauty of B&W is to show the range of grey scale which is missed in this photo.

  1. with your 5dII, he may shoot with raw file and to adjust the lightest part of this capture more decent.  Now, it was little bit washed out.  I shot this scene with slide film 15 years ago.  I metered the lightest part which was the washed out area in your capture and then printed it on cibachrome material with detailed adjustment of conttrast.

In digital capture, at least you could meter the scene more precisely and shoot few captures by different f stops.  Then you could present a more decent capture here.

I think the photo was over-exposed.  I had been there.  I kept on reminding myself to take good care of the lightest part of the reflected sun light.  If this one was exposed one to two stops lower, it should be good photo.

look like the fly is added artificially...the flower looks abnormal in terms of light...

the flower and a leaf in the front are in focus...if this photo was shot by tele lens, this photo is against the law of focus depth...so I think the fly and flower are added afterward

  2. Don't like the dark foreground!

I just imagine when Graeme drove his car when the strom was approaching at night. He needed to find a position to set up his camera. As I also use 4x5 camera, I know the time of setting up in darkness. We are not the one who works in a studio and makes composition slowly to get a perfect one. In this photo, time is the key. As Graeme mentioned, when he tried to load Velvia, the strom just passed. When shooting photos of this sort, we are at total mercy of the weather.
