Thanks guys, this is some great advice.

I am going to combine all your suggestions and get a couple of sample packs. I?m going to learn on Epson glossy and matte and get the benefit of their profiles but also try a pack Crane Museo and Hahnemuhle FA Pearl as well; that way I can start to build-up an experience baseline on them. I will probably get a couple of other sample packs from Ink Jet Art. I know that I have a lot of work and experimenting to do but I wanted a good place to start and that is what you have given me.

    Thanks, again.

Patrick, it seems that you are going through the same kind of thought process that many of us do. I choose the 3800 because Epson has a good reputation for quality and customer service. The 3800 will allow me the flexibility to print larger which I like on many images. It will be a fantastic learning machine and will give me professional quality results. I do this mostly as a hobby, although I do sell prints. I don?t tend to look at the cost as the decisive factor since the ability to learn the craft and produce ?art? for my personal walls is the reason I do photography. The real benefit is in the creative flexibility and learning process for me. Relating my experience in the darkroom to digital is that ink is a consumable just like the chemicals. I am willing to bet that the carts will last more than 6 months and the 80ml will make the price point better than the 14ml ones on the 2400. Also I think that once you get a printer you will actually get so into the process that you will use the ink. Anyway, that is how I see it for me. Good luck on your decision.

  2. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas Everyone!

I need some feedback and comments from all the Epson 3800 users.

I'm expecting my 3800 this Wednesday Dec. 27th and I need some advice on which

papers seem to be working for everyone. I intend to do comparisons over the

next few weeks but I would appreciate any advice on what you guys like best so

far so I have a good place to start. I do a lot of B&W but also color. Glossy,

luster and matte depending on the effect I want and the image so please feel

    free to comment on anything.

Thanks as always for your great perspective.

  3. Louis,

I just recently bought the NEC2070NX and it is a fantastic monitor. I paid $485 delivered from Newegg. The display is beautiful, the look of my photos is better than I have ever seen them and for general use it is excellent. I can give it my personal high recommendation.

BTW the max brightness is way more than I need, I have to turn it down for any of my uses. I can't imagine what a brighter monitor would be like. The contrast is great and it calibrated easily.

    Good luck!

  4. Louis,

I did buy the NEC2070NX and it is a fantastic monitor. I paid $485 delivered from Newegg. The display is beautiful, the photos are better than I have ever seen them and the general use is excellent. Now, I'm not a gamer so I can't speak to that but we have tried a few and for me they worked fine. I can give it my personal high recommendation.

  5. Jerry and Bruce,

    Thanks for your opinions.

After more review and thought I have decided to go with the LCD 2070NX. I can't justify the price difference at this time and since so much will change over the next year it seems wise to limit the cost right now. Also I have seen the 2070NX and it is a beautiful monitor. Based upon you experience, Bruce, I should have no issue with the pictute quality after calibration. Several other owners also said that it calibrated right up using Spyder, Monaco or other systems.

I'll order it from NewEgg tomorrow. Thanks again

  6. Ok, after much research and reading the posts on this forum I have narrowed it

    down to the following:

    1.NEC Multisync LCD 2090UXi or

    2.NEC Multisync LCD 2070NX

I know that these are both S-IPS, have excellent specs (almost identical) and

have gotten good reviews from users as well as from several technical review

sites. Before I jump in I would like to get some practical advice about the

real world use. Especially since the 2090 at $1075 is 2+ times the price of

the 2070 at $475. These are the best internet prices in the US that I can find

from known suppliers. I?m not exactly a pro so I probably don?t need every

last drop of color control perfection but I do want to be able to color

calibrate it and I do want good performance. I do need this to be very good

for photo editing and retouching but also for day to day use for general

    office type work etc.

So, is the 12 bit LUT and the 12 bit gamma correction really worth the price

difference and can I get the same performance from the 2070 if it is properly

calibrated and can I calibrate it properly without the advantage of these?

What else may I be missing?

I have to admit that I'm not sure that I really understand the adsvantage of

the LUT capability on the 2090 UXi.

Your perspective, as always, will be most appreciated.

    Thanks again,

    Rob

  7. Jon and Michael,

Thanks for the input. I do intend to buy a calibration set and will look into the ones that you mentioned. I don't usually play games so my photoshop work is the most taxing. Ya, the Eizo units technically look fantastic but $2800 right now would probably get me divorced. MY wife has been very tolerant while I have been replacing all my film based equipment with digital but I have to be reasonable for awhile.

I'll look for the German reviews as well. Thanks again.

  8. I need to get a new monitor for photo editing and general use. I am only

interested in a LCD and want it to be about 20?. My budget is $900, or less

hopefully. I am also intending to get the new Epson 3800 printer, when it is

available, so my main focus is on being able to calibrate the monitor so it

gives me a WYSIWYG on the prints.

It?s been a while since I bought a new monitor and now I really want to

coordinate with the total editing workflow. My current one came with the

Gateway system I?m using and it is basically ok but not good enough for

    serious photo editing.

There seems to be a large number of monitors out there and names like LaCie,

Eizo, NEC, HP and Dell seem to pop up pretty regularly. I have done a bit of

research but would be very grateful for any advice or comments from fellow

    photographers.

    Thanks in advance.

    Rob
