With 2000$ , you should be able to find a used Sigma 500 f4.5 AFS. Brilliant for birding . check Jemini Joseph pics with that one .

I have a 600mm which has a lens coat. Looks pretty good, but I guess it keeps my lens scratch free . I doubt it would help camoflague in any way , except if I am dressed in a similar outfit.
Colton : A 600mm will not focus @ 5 ft away :)

Most of the shots here are with a 300mm f4 and 2X TC on a D200. I have found this lens to be very sharp even with a TC . Ensure you have good light .
It is a value for money lens and I had it for almost 3 yrs, till I upgraded last week.

You can check out the D3 too , from Nikon, if u are willing to wait a bit.

Bhavesh,
300 v/s 400 is a no brainer. The 400 D wins hands down. The 400D will not focus with 2X TC with either combo. You will have to buy the mark series for that. The 400 is an awesome lens, if you want to handhold the combination w/o extenders. With extenders , unless you have great light on u r side, I would not recommend hand holding it. Personally , I would go for the 500f4IS for birding. Almost the same price and the IQ is just too good.
All the best with your decision.

Anybody who has used the above combination?? I would like to know about any
compatibilty issues with the combo.

Wow ! I am overwhelmed by the response this has given.
As to my style of shooting , I use the tripod a lot, and I shoot almost 2500 frames a month. http://www.rakeshdhareshwar.com . At present I use the 300 f/4 with a 1.4 and a 2X TC.
The Canon route looks very tempting. I definetly do not think that Nikon w.o VR would be value for money. I will wait for a max. of 6 months and then , if Nikon does not offer VR, I would have no other choice , but to jump ship. Looks like Sigma is out of the contention, if I cannot shoot wide open.
Thanx again guys and Happy New Year to all of you.
-
Thanx Guys,
I use the Nikon D 200. A 500f/4 manual?? sorry , doubt that. I am waiting for a Nikon 500 f4 VR AFS and am willing to spend that kind of money for it. My only worry for the existing version is that it is not value for mony considering that Canon has IS on the equivalent and is much much cheaper too. I know atleast 6 fellow Nikon birders jump ship to Canon. I dont want to so that.
-
I know it is not a great question and the obvious choice would be Nikon. But I
would like you to think from my POV for now.
1. Do I have the money for the Nikon.....Yes.
But I dont think it is value for money. I normally shoot birds and I now shoot
with a 300 f4 Nikon AFS.
My hitch is that Canon has IS for that same type. Canon also has IS for the
500f4, 400f2.8 and 600f4.
I feel that VR is a very important factor at high focal lengths. I do not want
to jump ship, so I was thinking , that if Nikon is not going to introduce VR on
the 500, then is it not beter to go for the 500 4.5 Sigma which is a lighter
lens.and less expensive. But is it value for money???
-
Yes, it is the same. I had the diffusion dome on, so it was setting itself to 14mm. Thanx for the answer.
-
Hi ,
I am facing this major problem with my SB 800 on the D200. The flash is stuck at
14mm . I have read the manual and tried to change it, but I can't. HAs anyone
faced a similar problem??
Thanx in advance for the replies.
Regards,
Rakesh

This seems quite fine. Also remember that the 350D is not the best bodies around when it comes to focusing. A friend of mine used to have the 350D and was not happy with a lot of his lenses. He has the 30 D now and the same lenses are giving much better results.
-
Daniel,
I use the 300 mm f/4 AFS , with my Kenko 2X TC and the focussing is not bad at all.
From the sharpness POV , you can check out my gallery here and judge for yourself.

I regularly shoot with a Kenko 2X TC on my 300mm f/4 AFS. The lens is incredibly sharp and can take a TC easily. Infact I have got some good results with stacked TCs too.
The above link is to a pic i shot with a 2X TC.

I'll try that. Ben. Thanx.

Thanx Brian,
This would be a real good move. You can still restrict it to say 10uploads/day for subscribers and 5 for non subscribers ar something like that. Another isue is that I do my PS on CS and have to resize it in PS6 to upload to this site as it does not accept xml-coded files. Is there a way around. Saving for the net brings down the image quality too much.
-
This is one of the few sites which do not offer multiple upload. It
is very time consuming to upload pics. one by one. Can we have this
feature available in the near future?
-
Thanx Mark. Yes my question was precisely that. Does the combination behave like a 600mm 2.8 or 600mm 5.6. Thanx for the precise answer.
-
does DOF change when I use a TC. eg.. with a 300mm 2.8 , if i put a
2X TC , i lose 2 stops of light. But does the DOF also increase or
my DOF still remains the same as it would be in 2.8.
-
Thanx for the response. Have bought the 300mm f/4 and a kenko 1.4 . and I love the combination.
-
Thanx Frank. Got the kenko PRO 300 and am I happy with the combination????? Stellar.
-
I had this similar choice problem with the Bigma. Settled for the 300mm f4. WOW what a glass! Flipside , it does not work with my AF converter, so have to invest in AF-S TCs.
What to replace the D70 with?
