  1. I'd used the Sigma EX 2X APO TC on my EF 300 f2.8 L (non-IS). My SLR reported the correct aperture (f5.6), however, AF speed is not substantially reduced (ala Canon TC's). Comparing it with my Canon 2X TC, the Sigma is visibly softer, more so at the edges than the center. Egrets shots were visibly better (4R prints) with the Canon TC compared to Sigma.

I agree with Bob that using 2X is gonna degrade optical performance anyhow, might as well go for something that degrade less (Canon) than more (Sigma).

  2. My 300mm f2.8 L barely fit inside my minitrekker, and the weight load on the straps meant that I ain't entirely feeling secure with it hanging off my back. IMO a Nature or Photo Trekker will do much better (given that the 500/4.5 is much longer than my 300/2.8). I am using the Photo Trekker AW now, and it will fit my 300 + 2X TC + bodies attached. Only problem I have with the bag is the "creaking" sounds resulting from the plasticky joints.... anyone here with suggestions on how to solve it?
  3. I am definately in for the 600mm. I just went a sanctuary in my country a week ago (with a 300/2.8L), quite sad coz even the big birds like Herons and Egrets are far away, plus there is no provision for me to go closer. I managed to get some frame filling shots when attached to a Sigma EX 2X TC (getting a 600 f5.6) from a fellow photog there. Size and composition is fine, problem is the Sigma is soft and does vignette. Just ordered a Canon 2X TC. IMO 600 mm is definately IT if you are in for bird photography. Just need to start going to the gym to build those biceps some.
