  1. Hi all

I am still pondering whether to buy a 100-400L or not.

I have in the past thought about a 2x converter for my 70-200 f2.8L IS, but

    decided against it.

If any kind soul has a 100-400L, could they please mail me a sample of shots

taken at 400mm, RAW files, so I could perform some tests in Photoshop, against

    my own shots.

As it would make a difference, I have a 1D2N, therefore a 1.3x crop factor.

It would be best if the shots were taken on a similar crop sensor.

    Many thanks in advance

    David

  2. Hi folks

Firstly, may I just say that this is not a normal 'how do I clean my sensor?'

    question.

    This one's a bit different.

    The question(s) is(are):

    How clean IS my sensor?

How do I tell if I've cleaned it enough?

Will I go blind if I do it too much?

What is clean to you, may not be to me, so I have attached a screenshot of my

test pic, with Auto-Levels applied in PSCS2, after taking the shot at

f22/6secs/1stop over, against a white background extremely out of focus.

Let me know what you think.

Happy New Year to you all.

  3. Hi guys

Thanks for the replies so far. The body is a 1d2n. I am very happy with the results with the 70-200 'bare', but need a little more distance. I have thought about the 100-400, but this means a lot more weight in the bag, i don't particularly like the trombone thing, and i think the quality i will get with the 2x will be 'enough' for me. 4. Hi

I know that questions have been asked in the past regarding using the Canon 70-

200 f2.8 IS L with the Canon 2x Extender, so I will not ask advice, but would

like to know if someone could mail me some files taken with the above

combination at various apertures & focal lengths to illustrate the quality to

allow me to make up my mind whether it's suitable for my purposes.

    Manu thanks in advance.

  5. Bicubic Smoother should be used for interpolating up, Bicubic Sharper for interpolating down.

Genuine Fractals does a reasonable job, but these are ready and very easy to use, and hard to get wrong if you get the correct one!

Some people say you should only interpolate up by 10% at a time. I think that was before the CS / CS2 versions as these seem to be ok to do in one go.

Best thing to do is to try them out and work out yourself what to do.

  6. Hi Peter

I am also going to RIAT this weekend. I have shot literally hundreds of airshows, and I am also now fully digital.

My advice would be to use One Shot and the centre focus spot (or any other point this seems suitable at the time) for static aircraft, and the same for taxiing aircraft.

For display aircraft, such as say, the Typhoon (fast), or Chinook (slow), use all the focus points, and AI servo focussing.

I base this on my 1Dmk2N - I assume that the 20D is at least similar.

I hope that is some help to you, but please remember that any advice you get will be based on peoples' own experience, or by the look of some of the replies, based upon what they have read.

Have a play with fast (ish) moving traffic from a motorway bridge for a laugh and to provide a bit of an insight.

    Cheers

  7. Hi all

Could someone tell me why paparazzi photographers seem to flip the rotating

tripod ring-mount to the top of their telephoto lenses?

I ask this because I also do this to stop my fingers getting trapped between it

and the lens, but I was wondering if there was another 'professional' reason

    for this.

    Many thanks

    Dave

  8. Well actually it's a 21 day evaluation. If i was able to download it i would do that very thing to try it, but as i'm sending this from an internet cafe whilst on holiday, i thought i'd ask the 'experts'. It seems that no one knows, or they don't understand the question.

    Many thanks

  9. Hi

After formatting the Sandisk Extreme3 2Gb CF card in my 1Dmk2N, I notice that

the number of available shots reported by the camera is now 187. It used to

show 195 after formatting. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it possible that

the camera works out the available shots on a memory card based upon the last x

    shots taken?

I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this as it's 'doing

    my head in'.

Please note that I have not altered any file size settings in any way, I only

shoot RAW, never any JPEG's, don't shoot RAW + JPEG, use the same card which

shows the same formatted size (1.90Gb), and have the latest firmware which has

been in use for two months.

    Many thanks in advance.

    David
