Thanks for your responses. The flash does indeed fire. I've gone through all the Custom Fn's and flash settings but don't see anything that could cause this. No CF's set on the flash, nor anything dialed in....
When I use my 10D with the 580EX, everything works fine. Could it be something to do with ETTL-II? I've read on the web that ETTL-II has a tendency to underexpose but not to the extent that I'm seeing.

I'm having problems using my 5D with my 580EX. When I use it on "P"
mode to take flash pictures, it comes out VERY underexposed, almost
to the point of being black. Adjusting flash exposure compensation
to +2 doesn't seem to help.
I upgraded from a 10D, and I never had any problems using the 580EX
with it.
Do I need to get the camera serviced? Or could there be a setting
that I'm not using right? I went through the 5D's custom functions
but didn't see anything that could cause this.
Any help would be appreciated.

For fill flash, you don't want to use "P" mode. Try using "Av" (aperture priority).

I only have Photoshop 7, and I don't think it has an "Export layers to file" script. Is there an easy way to do this in PS7 instead of "saving as" the multiple-layered image and then deleting the extra layers?

Thanks, everyone! I decided to use Denis' method since I wanted to first be able to place the cropping frame exactly as I wanted. I did sacrifice some picture quality, though, since I had to convert the images to 8 bits before I could move them to the new canvas.

Hi,
I have a series of pictures that I'd like to crop, but I'd like to
crop them in exactly the same way, i.e., in the exact same position
in each of the pictures.
I have Photoshop 7. Is there a way to place the cropping frame in
the exact same place and with the same dimensions in each picture?
Thanks,
David

Can someone explain why larger pixels would give a greater dynamic range?
And how would you rank the 10D, 1D, 1DM2, and 1Ds in terms of dynamic range? I have a 10D and have always been unhappy with blown highlights. Do the 1D or 1DM2 exhibit a noticeably better dynamic range?
Thanks,

For an overall travel / carry lens you should consider the 28-135mm IS. I have the 70-200/2.8; it's a great lens. I hear the f4 version is similar in quality.

It happened to me just a few months ago! I also let my subscription lapse, then suddenly got a notice from NSA. I called OP and told them about the situation, they then "cancelled" my subscription.
If my credit rating gets hurt by this, I'm complaining to the BBB and my state's (CA) Dept. of Consumer Affairs.

I admittedly didn't do the calibration (nor am I viewing) under controlled conditions - just my room which was lit by daylight. I also have tungsten bulbs in the room, so I realize my setup is not ideal for calibration.
I am using PS 7, and did turn on Proof Colors.
The print doesn't look bad by any means, it just looks darker than what was on my screen.
I take it from the answers that the print should match with what the monitor shows, then?
I'll try the Epson profiles as well.
Thanks for your help.

Hello -
How close should I be able to get in terms of matching my prints from
my Epson 1270 to what I see on my monitor?
I bought a printer profile for my printer/paper (1270/Epson Premium
Gloss) combination from inkjetmall.com. After I installed that, I
used the ColorVision Spyder to calibrate my monitor (a Trinitron).
After I made some test prints, I noticed that the prints turned out
darker than what showed on the monitor. The prints weren't
unsatisfactorily dark, but noticeably. Is this normal, or should I
be expecting pretty much WYSIWYG?
Thanks,

Hi,
Is there anywhere to rent EOS lenses in Silicon Valley ? I know of
Keeble & Shuchat in Palo Alto, but they already booked the 100-400,
which is what I want to rent.
Thanks,
-
Looks fine to me. Remember that you will need to sharpen any pics taken with a digital camera.

Thanks for all your responses. The problem turned out to be a loose screw that would prevent the lens from rotating all the way. The technician said it was not an uncommon problem. Took it to a local authorized Canon repair shop, they had it repaired in 1 day. Bill was $120.

I seriously doubt you're going to be able to buy a suitable backpack for your budget. My advice would be to splurge and get a nicer one; your back will thank you.
I recently got the LowePro Nature Trekker AWII ($230), and I think it will be able to handle your stuff. I can put into it: Canon 10D with 70-200/2.8L attached; EOS 3 with 28-135 attached; 550EX; 1.4X extender; filters; film; and 50/1.8 with room leftover. Plus, I attach my tripod to it.
It has the hip-hugging straps which take the load off your shoulders and onto your hips. True, it is heavy, but I only hiked for a mile or so at a time.

I noticed that the 28-70/2.8 has been replaced by the 24-70/2.8 (when
did this happen?). How does the 24-70 perform? I checked photodo
for ratings, but it hasn't been rated.
I also tried doing a search on photo.net but couldn't come up with
many references to it (maybe I wasn't typing in the right keywords).
Thanks,

Hello -
I was shooting in Yosemite the other day and all of a sudden my 28-
135 would not go past 70. OR, sometimes it would only go from 35-
135. I am perplexed. I did not drop it, and it did not undergo any
shocks prior to that.
Anyone have any ideas?

17-mile drive in Pebble Beach. Great scenery.

Hello -
I'm planning a trip to Yosemite and would like suggestions for
Motels/Inns close to Yosemite Valley. I've looked at the places
inside the valley, but the ones I'm interested in are all booked
already.
Thanks!

A major reason I switched from the D60 was autofocus. Autofocus on the 10D is much improved.

There's also www.photodo.com, although they went through a site redesign a few years ago which IMHO made it more difficult to search on lenses.

Nice site, Keith! Can anyone point me to other web sites made with Dreamweaver? You all have piqued my curiousity. :-) Which version of Dreamweaver would you recommend? I see MX and Contribute, is MX all that much more powerful than Contribute?
Thanks.

On a related note, what are good programs that can sync up the music to the slide show ? I'd like to put up a slide show on the web and don't want to worry about how fast the user's computer or data line is.

Hello -
I'm located in Northern California, and am due for my company's
sabbatical next spring (around June). So I have a month to go places
(to take photographs!) where I normally wouldn't be able to go.
Where are some of the most amazing, fascinating places that people
have gone for photography? I was thinking of Antarctica, Galapagos,
Africa... I should probably go on a photography tour as opposed to
alone, right?
One thing I should mention is that I'm not in the best of shape so no
mountain climbing (unless by trolley :-) !
Any advice for me? I'm a serious amateur and am excited about the
opportunity I'll have.
Thanks for all your input.

Thanks, everyone, for your answers. I sent the camera to CFS, they repaired it, and it looks fine now.
They said that they "cleaned cmos, vf, mirror". What is "VF"?
Also, I was told that flash pictures using ETTL-II would be about a stop darker than with ETTL. Is this true?
Thanks,
