  1. Short expiry on this one - will canon (or others) go the way of ef-s

lenses (i.e. smaller image circle lenses) in the telephoto range like

Olympus has started to do? I'd love to see a fixed 500mm lens that is

smaller and lighter than the one i lug around now on my 10d. For

wildlife, 8mp or 12 mp on a 1.6x sensor is plenty resolution and

enlargability and this mated to smaller lenses would be great!

  2. Re your fears of losing your equip: use common sense while there, and for gods sakes insure it if it isnt covered by regular house insurance. People ask me 'aren't you afraid of getting that huge lens stolen?' and i say no, cause its insured. Besides, having your sealed 1v with you is a plus in difficult environments!
  3. I too have bought one from Fotodiox on the bay. The first one i got had considerable (unacceptable) play in it - they were good about taking it back and sending a better one. This second one has a bit of play in it, though i doubt it will affect images under normal use.

I dont know if there is a better alternative.

Ya gots to like the nikon 70-180 micro on a Canon 10d!

  4. First, do a proper search as this kind of Q has been asked many times. Second, 400mm is never enough for small things - if you are gonna go to the trouble of lugging a large lens it should be 5 or 600mm. Hand holding a 500 is a bad idea ... go to a store that has one and try. Definately go for the 500 4.5L as it is much cheaper than the new one and lighter.
  5. My partner and I might be interested for Sept. Christa has not been to that area, but has spent sig time in Africa. Yes, camping with our own car is how we'd like to do it.

Let's keep in touch. Are you a pro photog or amateur? We are very keen amateurs, both biologists, good naturalists etc. Both are early thirties.

  6. Wow - this need not be complicated. While outside, take your batteries and CF into your jacket pockets ... they will warm 'slowly' there. Leave all the rest of your gear in the backpack and leave by the front door (no t beside the fireplace). Done.
  7. Have a look on ebay to see where prices are for medium format - they are dropping real fast! Search the medium format page for more insight than you'll prob get here. Borrow or rent the camera (a store will let you use it in the store at least) and compare it direcly with your rb67 to convince yourself you'll be happy with it. I dont miss scanning time anymore! There will soon be a canon 10-22mm and there's always the sigma for wide angle.
  8. Hi,

Done some searcing but cant find the answer. Very quick Q: Are the

makro-symmar series of lenses no good for general use and at infinity?

Or, is it just fine (but perhaps not perfectly optimal?)? I was

thinking an 80mm might be great for wide angle scenic + macro.

    thanks

    Pete

  9. Are you driving up from CA? If so, then fersure hit Glacier first. If fying in, rent yer car in Canada cause its cheaper with the exchange, then head south to Waterton lakes NP and Glacier (only 4 hours south of Calgary). Its further south, possibly lower elevation (check) and get warmer weather generally than alpine areas in Banff/Jasper/Yoho so flower are further along. great scenery that's right by the road in glacier at the pass. Alpine flowers are more work in the Can rockies - might want to check out Manning Prov Park in BC as there is a road right to the top of a mountain known for flowers but that's maybe outside your driving boundary. Contact me direct for more ideas kirk.

I'm gonna try and get out shortly and see what's blooming, but right now and lately the weather has been pretty shitty (which means flowers will be good).
