  1. Yes, all Nikon AF lenses will function perfectly on the D50, or any Nikon DSLR for that matter.

I use the 35-70/2.8 on my D50 and it becomes a great portrait lens.

travel to some remote corners in the world where there are no camera stores and no repair

shops. So whatever I bring had better work, at least as much as possible."

The D200 is undoubtedly better built. However, you can buy two D80's for the price of one

D200. The chance of two D80's failing in a remote corner of the world is probably less than

the possiblity of one D200 failing.

  3. If you buy the Macbook Pro, you get OS X and can run XP in a window using virtualization

software from VMWare or Parallels. You can also dual boot into XP with Apple's own Boot

Camp software. Worst case, you find you don't like OS X you just run XP native on it full

    time.

Buy a Dell laptop and you don't get OS X.

I use Parallels to run XP on my Macbook Pro from time to time - it just works. As soon as a

Universal binary of Photoshop is released, I shouldn't need Parallels much anymore.

Photoshop Mac version is slower running under emulation on the Intel Macs than the PC

version running in Parallels. Virtualization is orders of magnitude faster than emulation.

    >"I'm happy with jpg too. Get it right the first time..."

How often this phrase turns up as some sort of insult to those of us who shoot RAW.

    > I always advise prospective clients to ask potential photographers if they use JPEG (like

Dad and Mum does on their Sonys) and tell them to stand well clear.

Turn around is fair play, right?

Because the only difference between Mum & Dad's Sony and a Pro is whether they shoot

    RAW or JPG?

  5. Yup, sounds like you're set on the Mac Pro, I think with good reason. Given that you seem

to keep your machines rather than ride the upgrade train, there's no doubt in my mind

that you'd be making a mistake buying yesterday's dual G5.

I use Photoshop on my Macbook Pro, but not under Rosetta. I'm using Parallels and XP

with the Windows version of Photoshop and getting much better performance than when I

tried the PowerPC version on the Macbook.

Definitely looking forward to the day that Adobe gets off their butts and releases the

    universal binary.

  6. I'm happy with a Crumpler Formal Lounge backpack. I think the particular model I have has

been replaced. I like the fact that it doesn't look like I'm carrying a DSLR and a laptop. Also

like the main compartment being inaccessible while worn. Holding up well after 18 months

near daily use. Took it through Cancun airport earlier this year.

  7. Since the D80 has a sync speed of 1/200 and goes to ISO 100, and the D70s has a sync

speed of 1/500 and goes to ISO 200, does that mean they're effectively equal on the question

of sync speeds for the purposes of fill flash performance?

  8. > If not, I recommend a local authorized Nikon repair shop.

Sorry, but I think if the camera is defective, there is no point getting it repaired.

There's absolutely no shortage of used film cameras dumped on the market, replaced by

DSLRs. Use the opportunity to buy a DSLR, or pick up a used film body for much less than the

cost of any repairs. N80's (a much more capable camera than the 55) are going for a little

over $100. F100's under $400. Incredible but true.

  9. Thanks for the response and link, Michael. Unfortunate that Brian hasn't given any more

thought to what we might want/wish to do with the equipment list since that thread brought

up the same issue 2 years ago.

It has value as an inventory list and it costs essentially nothing in data storage. Too bad.

  10. I updated it last in January. I wasn't aware that it was a requirement to have photos in my

portfolio to use the equipment list.

I believed it was very useful as an offsite inventory / serial number list. Quite disappointed

that it's not, and is subject to arbitrary deletion. I must have missed the notice. I would have

thought it a benefit of being a subscriber.

  11. Lisa, you're 'relatively uneducated in photography' yet you want to shoot weddings. You're

going to spend $1700 on a D200 and another $1000 on lenses.

Why not take a few steps back, pick up a D50 kit for $800 or a D70 kit for $1000 and learn a

bit more before spending three times that on a pro body and lens?
