A refurbished D800e body @ Nikon USA online is priced as much as a new D810 + extras...such an offer makes no sense for a buyer shopping for an FX DSLR. I'd be happy if Nikon were to discount refurbished D800e then it would interest me.
(I have two that I bought new)

Thanks, this is so interesting and nostalgic, oh to have my old issues of Modern Photography ..my first SLR was a used Asahi Pentax with no light meter, bought in 1974.

This opinion might be due to my age but I do find 1.0 easier to navigate - I never had any complaints about the original format.

Here in the US, Canon Online Store sells a refurbished 5DMkiii body for $2099 with a 1 year warranty...only $400 less than new but for us amateurs that savings can be used towards a lens, accessories, etc.

The D800e has been my only camera for the last two years; during this time I have trying to find 3 lenses that cover all my amateur photography needs. With the 60mm G as a normal & close focus lens and the 70-200mm VRii for slightly more distant subjects, I wanted something wider than my 35mm f/1.4 G. I tried a 24mm f/1.8 G, bought mine a month later and sold the 35mm. This new lens seems sharp and I appreciate its low weight/portability.

Shun, this posting disappeared from my computer - I just came across your question today. I am quite happy with the my 50mm & 35mm Sigma ART lenses. The Sigma seems to have lower distortion than the Nikon, nice color & sharpness.

I always kept the lens hood attached to my 50mm f1.4, while shooting and in the camera bag to protect the front part of the lens; my copies were very sharp.

Thanks Mike, that escaped me; just checked photozone's f4VR analysis - as I had imagined that VRii @200mm is a tough act to follow.

-

Thank you, precisely what I was trying to find; the woodgrain is noticeably more detailed in the 300mm photo.

Dan Brown, forgive this "apples to oranges" question ( posted elsewhere with no replies) about IQ for a particular purpose: I use my D800/ 70-200mm VRii in my kayak for NH/ME coastal and back channel photography, with the lens glued @200mm. If it would be nice to have more reach/less weight without sacrificing resolution, etc. As I have aged, walking up to Bubble Rock in Acadia Park with heavy gear has become more challenging; this 300m might be handy in such situations also. Can you or any other forum member compare this new lens with the zoom@200mm?

For my D800's: Last year I paid $115 for a used Manfrotto 3236 w/Calumet carrying bag (looks like a carbine case) and later paired it with a new Mg Manfrotto ball head when the same store offered a $75 discount for any tripod traded in; (my trade-in was a $5 tripod purchased at a Goodwill Store); the combo weighs about 14lb., total cost was about $200. I like the tripod geared column + the individual leg angle adjustments (like my former Manfrotto I bought 30+ years ago) - I can't get used to the new click stop legs.

Wi-Fi and GPS were the first things I shut off/disabled on my 6D. I would love to slip a CF card into either of these DSLR's and take a few shots with my 100mm f2.8L and the new ultra wide angle zoom.

-

I have one Canon 6D with a 100mm f2.8 L permanently welded to it for my close-ups and three Nikons DSLR 's for everything else. The big increase in megapixels does not interest me while better DR would but as a just for fun/ amateur photographer, such a high price increase would be a serious deterrent.

If this new 300mm lens is as good as my 70-200mm VRII is @ 200mm/ f5.6 -f8, I will go for it!

After trying a Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART, the next day I bought it and traded my 35mm f1.4 G for a 35mm Sigma ART for my D800e's. I have always purchased Nikon cameras since the mid 1970's until now to use exclusively with Nikkor optics; this was a first for me.

"On the other hand, if I bought a D700 I'd have more options for a good wide angle lens." Do you mean that because of the cost difference between the a new D750 vs used D700, you would have money left to invest in a wide angle lens? You have some nice lenses, in your situation I would opt for a new D750 then sell what you do not use and buy the wide angle lens. I replaced my D700 with a D800 two years ago, with no regrets. If I were starting over though, I would get the D750 and video does not interest me either.

With more landscape photography in mind, I ask users of the 20mm f1.8 G an opinion on distance performance vs this lens' close-up ability. I have seen a Zeiss 25mm lens that shines in the close range more than for distance shots.

Mike Halliwell: mounted on a tripod for northern light shots, my D800e + 35mm f1.4 G with the lens slide in the M position, refocused or unfocused each time I pressed the shutter release. It was cold and windy so I grabbed a second body with a 60mm. The first camera focused manually if I changed the body MF lever but still not with the lens M position. Later I did a reset, started over with my settings and it has manually focused fine since.

Douglas, I have no major complaints about my D800 and the only interesting improvement for my amateur stuff would be the lower vibration shutter...but the familiar is more compelling than the unknown and with the recent price drop, I could be very happy with a D800e as a second body.

-

New D800e's can now be bought here in the US for $3100 to $3200 - not a big savings but for someone who is happy with and/or accustomed to the D800/D800e, it's an opportunity to pick up a second body, etc.

At a local camera store here in the US, I inquired about the possibility of a future D800 & D800e price reduction; the manager informed me that according to Nikon USA, the current pricing would not change for another 6 weeks. The Nikon Americas website only has refurbished D800 bodies in stock, no D800e.

Andrew, thank you for explaining the writing delay after long exposures; it never occurred to me to disable the long exposure NR. Although I have enough accumulated in my Amazon "reserve" to purchase a second DSLR now, it is wiser to wait for reviews based on actual usage before deciding on the previous or the new model.

-

Still no price drop here for the D800/D800e...I never use live-view but after a 15 second exposure, with a 60mbs CF card there is a delay in writing the file.

-

Only the potential improvement of the shutter/mirror assembly has my interest but I will wait until the smoke clears. At least for now I can stop obsessing about when the D800e price (for new) will drop.

For a second year in a row my bank account has be charged
