I shoot a lot.. and at the end of the day I erase double, bad and non sharp pictures.. so after deleting I usually end up with around 200 pictures per day, that is 2 GB for each day if you are shooting RAW or 600MB per day shooting jpeg.
For 6 weeks.. I don't know.. may be 16GB and laptop (with 100GB hard drive) and bunch of empty dvd for backup :)

Thank you!
So I should check and add output voltage of both flashes and if the total voltage is lower than 30d can handle, it is safe to use?
-
How can I connect two flashes (Metz 54MZ-4 and Canon 580EX II) with cord on
Canon 30d? I need them both off camera.
Is it safe to connect one flash with PC Sync connector/cable.. and another with
hot shoe adapter?
Thank you!

What about ETTL on Metz 58, is it real ETTL (thru the lens) or simulation as on Metz 54 MZ4?
-
I apologize for my bad English.. :(
Thank you for your answers!
I never been to a big airplane, just in few small ones (Cesna and alike, where we would keep things on our self).. we are traveling from Europe (Slovenia) to Africa (Egypt) so I guess it is big plane.. :)
Basically you say that I should not have problem getting in airplane with Orion AW?
-
Which lowepro backpack is suitable for tacking it on airplane (so that it can
fit in compartment above seat)?
I prefer backpack with two compartments like Orion or Orion Trekker AW (lover
compartment for photo gear, and upper for other stuff.. like food etc.)
Thank you!

Thank you Nadine!
I tried to cover all corners of flash.. but it is all the same.. although I noticed some round black plastic under flash head surface in lower left corner.
The only thing I noticed that makes difference is extracting integrated diffuser, when I use it.. the pictures are way to overexposed :( totally burned.
Could it be that sensor is somewhere under extracted diffuser?
Do you have problem using diffuser in (E)TTL mode?
-
I downloaded the manual form Metz's home page.. you are right :( it's not working with diffuser. Thank you!
I've noticed when I'm using white card (home made) and shooting objects at close range.. the highlights are burned :/ I guess that is also problem with sensor emulation.

Actually I don't have that much experience using "A" mode..
I use ETTL for shooting at night where A mode would try to light up whole scene and not just subject in front of me - resulting with overexposed subject.. and for daylight fill in flash..
Only time I use "A mode" is when I need extra flash power shooting inside..

Hi everybody!
I have Metz 54MZ-4 flash which I'm using on Canon 30d body with Canon adapter,
and it works fine in ETTL mode. The problem occurs when I attach Lumiquest
Ultrabounce on flash's head - the flash becomes useless.
While I'm taking picture of close object it overexpose picture for at least 1
stop, and if I'm trying to take a picture of a big room (big ceilings)it
overexpose it for a least 2-3 stops.. practically you never know what to get..
it seams that ETTL is not working with ultrabounce attached :(
What is the problem? Solution?
It seams (but I haven't tested it so much) that it only expose right in "A"
mode, but I need ETTL :(
Please help!

Thanks!
I tried few hours ago :( not good :(
Any other solution?
Anyone?

I was shooting sailing regatta few days ago.. and since we were cruising around boats, some times boat was be in the sun, some times in shade..and some times against the sun.. it was (pardon me for expression) pain in the ass shooting it in M mode.. I couldn't see any data in viewfinder :(
Would some different viewfinder eyecup (bigger one used for shooting with glasses) or magnifier help?
-
Hi everybody!
I have a problem with Canon 30d (and 350d).. when I'm shooting at bright sunny
day I can't see exposure data in viewfinder.. they are just not bright enough,
big enough, bold enough.. actually I don't know what is the real problem is it
font size, viewfinder size or something else.
The same problem I had before with using Olympus E-1.
Only with Nikon (D200, D2H,..) camera I didn't have this problem. Every time I
would look thrue Nikon D2H's viewfinder the first thing I would notice was
exposure data..
I'm trying to get used shooting in M mode.. but this makes it really hard when I
have to struggle trying to read exposure data.. :(
Is there anyone with the same problem.. how did you resolve it?
Thank you!

Yes I agree, but is it safe to leave extra body and some lenses in 4 star hotel's room in Cairo?
I heard that Hotels in Hurgada are great, but in Cairo are not so great.. 3 and 4 starts Cairo hotels are usually without water etc.
So I was planing to take all my photo-gear with me all the time I'm out side hotel room.

Thanks Jonathan!
Great pictures!
I realise that most of the time I shoot ether 17mm which is on Canon's crop factor equivalent to 27mm, or around 50mm which is eqv. to 80mm. When I use telefoto lens (and I usually don't use it) I use it on 200+ mm.
That's why I thought to bring just 350d + 17-40 and 50mm.
I was also thinking about buying some cheap canon film body (EOS 1000 or EOS 3000), but to be honest I never shot using film :( so I'm afraid I'll mess up the photos.. but I didn't give up on that option jet.
Since you are often in Egypt, can you pleas tell me where do you buy a film, and how do you transport it back home regarding x-rays on airport etc.?
-
Thanks for advice!
Since we are scheduled to be 3 day in Hurgada.. we'll try to go to (Newiba and then by ferry to) Petra in Jordan and back for those 3 days. If it's not possible, then Luxor is our next favorite option :)
I' would definitely bring 50mm 1.8 :) I just love that lens and is not to big.. actually it can fit in my pocket if it has to ;) and there is also f1.8 vs f4 for low light shooting :)
But the question is whether to bring 70-200 2.8 :( this lens is fixed size so it takes a lots of space, and weights almost 2kg.
Do you know if there is any non-expensive way to burn photos form CF card to CD/DVD in those cities?

Hi!
Two days before Christmas me and few friends are going with travel agency to
Egypt. We are going to be there for 8 days, and travel program includes Cairo,
Alexandria and Hurgada. When we return I'm planing to write a few pages long
report of our journey with couple of (i hope good) pictures (topic would be
probably something like: alternative ways to spend winter vacancies instead
skying).. but since I'm going with a group of non photographers I'll probably
wont be able to wait for perfect shot, stall the people, return to the place
etc. everything has to be done in hurry.
I have following equipment:
Canon 30d + grip, 350d, 17-40 f4, 70-200 2.8, 50mm 1.8 and Metz 54MZ flash.
and since everything I'm bringing has to fit in 60 liter backpack plus small
lowepro belt pack what would you recommend to bring?
I'm tight on budget so buying 18-200 lenses etc. is out of equation.
My first option was 350d (same picture quality as 30d, but much less weigh, and
lees space) with 17-40 attached for general use, and 50mm 1.8 aside for
portraits (if it comes to that) or low light shooting, and left 70-200 and flash
at home.
I've never been to Egypt so I don't know how people react when they see big
lens, and I know it is hard to answer this question but would I miss 70-200 2.8?
I prefer to shoot with wide angle lenses, get in heart of action.. but.. I don't
know what to expect..
What do you usually bring to this type of travel?
I somehow believe that 350d + 17-40 and 50 1.8 would be lenses I would use 99%
of time.. but I'm under influence of limited space of backpack so I'm not
rational.. what would you recommend?

Thanks everyone for suggestions!
Thanks Rory, I never consider that solution. It sounds interesting!
The thing is.. I'm writing articles for sailing clubs webpage, and I travel a lot. Sometimes some guy becomes a new state champion, or he did something, and I know I have his picture somewhere on some dvd at home, but I'm few days away from home, so I have to search the web, try to find picture of that guy, that boat.. and things complicates (author rights etc).
Since I'm not payed for that and sailing club is non profit organization.. we are interested in open source or free solution.. or I could make some if there is no free one.
The ideal solution would be.. when I'm at home - download all pictures on server and enter keywords.
Run a script that would generate (from raw or full size jpg using dcraw or gd library) 200px thumbnail and 800*600px picture which is big enough for article.
Once I log in from internet.. there sould be some sort of keyword search form.. which would offer me thumbnails with metadata written along side them as results and link for downloading 800*600 picture and full size jpg or raw.
Does something like this egsists?
If not.. it would probably be a very good tool for journalists and professional photographers when they are on the road and they or their editors require some picture they took long time ago.

Picasa?
Isn't it just for cataloging and publishing pictures online not for accessing database from internet?
-
> So you want a cataloging program; take a look at idImager. Where do you want the keywords do be stored?
Yes, that's right. Cataloging program with internet front end.
Is there any open source / free one?
-
yes, thank you! but is there any free program to do that all? all in one?
Basically I'm looking for free stock program with only one user and without selling part of stock program. :)

Hi!
I have fast internet connection and permanent IP address where I work, and I
would like to setup a server for hosting my own pictures, so that I can access
them from where ever I'm. External hard drives would be plugged in using USB for
storage.. what I'm need is a program that will allow me to upload, a lots of
images (sometimes raw, sometimes jpg) and fill in informations about them.
When I need a picture, I would log in, enter keywords and the program would
generate and offer me a thumbnails and mid-size pictures for instant use, and
also link for downloading RAW.. is there any program like that avaliable or do I
have to make my own program using php, dcraw and mysql?
Is there any other solution?
Thanks in advance for any answer or advice!
Best regards,
Stipe
What good is the 70-200?
in Canon EOS Mount

<p>I use it for sport (soccer, tennis, sailing, basketball etc.), portraits, street, travel..and love it!<br>
The range is excelent if the lens is used on full frame body, on asp-c body it is little too long for everyday use.</p>
