  1. Yes you are wrong but that is a good thing. :)

New features come in two main types mainly software and mainly hardware. The software ones come almost for free. I.e. the marginal cost added on to your purchase approaches zero.

If Canon or anyone else left them out then they would lose some sales to other makers and the price of your (and my) 5D would have to go up to bring in the same revenue. So more features equals bigger market share and so cheaper products.

The new hardware features do add cost this is, just as you said, higher memory / transfer speeds. Rarely does a new / better focusing technology come along.

But not to complete in the faster is better race risks the same problem as with software features.

However IMO we are comming nearer and nearer to the point of not needing additional benefits. I know that my latest camera (nice light weight 400D) has fewer pixels than my 5D and I would not have wanted it to have more.

IMO the bottom line is that, at the moment, new features are currently attracting more purchases and so making cameras cheaper.

  2. The Cannon at 15mm is hardly worth calling a fish eye. You don't realy notice the fishness much. So it's the Sigma or the Peleng 8mm.

You won't use it more than a handfull of times (promise) I went for the Peleng 8mm moderate quality and manual. But if you have money to throw away go for the Sigma either way it will be unused within the year. :)

  3. Many thanks Zack - For others, It's not called properties (if it ever was) you need the control window and click the symbol (lower right) with the hammer and screw driver. (Without Zack's push I would not have persisted)

And the bast***s have stopped you inpuing an @ sign or period. Why! of course it is senisible to put in an email address [sIGH]

  4. I got the 5D with the 24-105 and the 17-40.

I have the Sigma 12-24 which I got when it came out to go on my 300D.

You want to the 17-40. I never bother to mount the 12-24 on the 5D. It just never happens. These days I tend to got out with the 5D 17-24 and a A710IS in my pocket for longer shots (I am not much of a long shooter).

  5. I paint watercolours most (11 x 14 in)

if you want to look. :) On my 300D I have the Canon 35mm f2.0 for just this job. I also leave the MR14 ling light on it. 85mm on a crop camera, you would need a huge stuido and small canvases. You may need wider than 35mm if you paint large.

  6. What you will learn (mainly) is how good or bad the scan is/was of the neg (or slide). You might learn a bit about how well the film had been held flat in that film body. And how the particular PP of that 5D shot compared with that film make.

What else are you expecting to learn? We know just how good "good shots" from a 5D can be, so what are you expecting to learn?

  7. "... does the Zoombrowser trick work with 5D files? "

I understand the problem, no it wont stop that anoying feature.

BUT there is a fix but only for the current shot. As soon as you have the pic dislayed press the info button three times and this gets the big view back and hold that one shot in place for you to look at.

  8. If you use ZoomBrowser EX to download the photos then this will happen automaticaly. If you copy them directly then do the following - IF YOU don't and use something else you will do MAD as some software will show you them one way and some the other (e.g. Photoshop).

    Here is the procedure

    After your copy -

    Run Zoom Browser EX

Select ALL the new pics (Ctrl A)

Right click any one of them and select from the menu

"Rotate According to the Rotation infomation"

A couple of OKs and you are done.

Of couse it's not an issue with raw. :)

  9. You are trying to operate outside the designed range. I believe that on the 5D Standard sync is 1/60 of a sec and High Speed will Sync at 1/250 (or is it 1/200) of a sec.

That it happens to sync higher than that on your 20D is down to two things LUCK and the fact that the shutter has only half a far (roughly) to travel on a 20D, because of the smaller sensor.

  10. I started to write out a three grand list BUT ... when I saw you say that you were going to get a loan. If you buy new then 80% of what you spend will go on the last 10% of image quality. Having gone from 300D to 5D I know how true this is.

So to get your 90% of image quality

Used 300D (with kit lens) e.g via ebay.co.uk 350+ ish (be paitent)

    Canon 50mm 1.8 70 quid ish

Photoshop elements 4 (or 3 if you can get a copy)

A couple of 1 GIG CF cards

A card reader to read them

    Bag Lowpro TLZ1

Everything else can wait while you debug your worklow, skill set and adjust your head.

Cost LESS THAN 600 quid and no-one outside of photo forums (and very few inside) would tell the difference. :)
