When I was taking the picture, I was dismayed by this woman barging

into my frame at the last moment. But now I see this is (to me)

actually better than a bare picture of the memorial. Do you agree?

    No, I wasn't lucky enough to spot this wonderful pose in the jungle;

this was Bronx zoo :) But I don't think you can tell that from the

    picture, can you?

I don't want to crop the topand bottom, since that would crop away the rein and the domes. I tried a B&W version, didn't look nice. Instead, I liked this quadri-tone. See if you like it.

I was actually shooting the horses at close range since they sometimes have very decorative headgear. I had the idea of juxtaposing this head in the foreground with the gate of the Memorial in the background. After shooting a frame, I noticed a carriage coming into the frame. I waited for it to come in, then shot. What you say might be right, because it would have a sharp subject between soft foreground and background. I don't know if it would necessarily have made a better picture, but I wish I had the chance to explore that.

There are a few horse-drawn carriages near the Victoria Memorial in

Calcutta which are essentially tourist attractions. But for the

present-day cab behind the carriage, this could have been a picture

    taken a hundred years ago.

Some kites usually swarm near the spires of St. Paul's cathedral in

Calcutta at dusk, heaven knows why. I managed to catch two of them in

    flight.

I agree with you too! I was using a 135mm lens with a +2 close-up filter. At this magnification (the berries were about 4-5mm in diameter) , I was afraid of camera shake at anything below 1/125, so had to settle for a shallow DOF. After seeing the print, I decided I would use a stand next time.

    Thanks for the comments.

My housemate (who's not a photographer) liked this, but a friend of

mine (who is) didn't. I am wondering what other photographers think.

I selectively desaturated the background in PS. Thanks for your time.

Yes, I realized that. I did clean the scanner thoroughly half an hour before scanning, which cleaned the dust but left a lot of lint :( Now I'll have to open it again...
  1. Maybe it's just me, but I would have liked a slightly different angle, i.e., shot from a little to the left. That way, the lowest tier of the chandelier would have been flanked by the blue door and the window. Now the colorful top of the window is being masked by the chandelier. Nice image nonetheless.

Desaturated green and yellow in PS part of the way. Comments, pretty

    please!!

BTW, is there any film that is highly saturated in just one range of

color and has a low saturation for other colors? For example, a film

that captures vivid red (or blue, or green) and dulls out other colors?

  2. Cropping both the sky and the tree on the left doesn't change the aspect ratio by much, so it isn't really panoramic. Still, is this better than what's above?

I don't really know what the streak of light is due to; it's possibly a flare from a street light, which I obviously missed during shooting. I agree, it's distracting.
