1. No card whatsoever with the Coolscan 5000. A too short USB cable was included, though, and no FH-3 negative carrier. Bummer. I purchased an Adaptec DuoConnect USB2.0/Firewire combo card which fits the bill, perfectly. On my machine, scans are roughly 50% faster with USB2.0 vs USB1.1. Although, the bulk of the time comes from transferring the scans from memory to disk, not from the scanner to memory.
 2. Hi, Scott.

My first true love of a camera is the X-700. I still use it
as a regular shooter, in fact. I got mine new in 1988 and
have had it serviced 3 times for issues that crop up for this
specific camera.

The first issue I had was a faulty capacitor which lives near
the shutter-release button. It's my understanding that this
capacitor _always_ fails on this camera. It's just a matter
of time.

My next issue was exactly as you describe. I don't recollect
offhand what the exact fix was, but a quick trip to my local
camera repair shop had it running as good as new.

The last issue, which I can't recollect the full specifics on
had to do with the meter. Again, a quick trip to the shop had
it running as good as new.

All told, _maybe_ I've spent $200 on repairs since I've owned
it. Not bad for 16 years use. Sure, you could buy a new camera
but who's to say it won't have issues pop up down the road, too.

It's been 5 years, or so, since I had the last maintenance done,
and it's been working like a champ. I only shoot a couple of
rolls a month with it, but I feel like it's my fall-back workhorse
now. After all, I've replaced most all of the electronic bits and
bobs that are capable of failing. :)

My recommendation would be to find a good repair shop that knows
the ins and outs of the X-700. They could give it a nice clean-up
and you'll have a camera that will last you quite a while.

Cheers,
Thad
P.S. I just purchased an MD Rokkor-X 50mm f1.2 lens off eBay for
very little, and am now happily shooting great shots, handheld
in low light. It just feels great shooting with gear I've had
since high school. :)

 3. Those effects are called 'Newton Rings'. I can't exactly explain the phenomenon, but it sure does occur when you do what you're doing. It's possible to obtain special glass that does not exhibit this effect, but I'd guess it would have to have be integrated into the scanner's bed somehow. See here for a supplier:
