To me the 17 85 is roo slow at 50~70mm for portraits, it requires good lighting indoors and leaves no room for blurring a busy background. I`d suggest a 50mm 1.8 if budget is tight, at f2~3.5 the lens is quite reasonable and just one light and brolly would do well...

I found the 40d too slow to use strobes in LV, its in the manual. maybe ok for still life but when I used it with a model the sec or 2 lag cause probs, never used it since

Interesting what you mean by limiting. if your nikon was aps-c then the 5d gives a shallower DOF by format. If talking light 5d is an improvement with higher ISO. will one stop make that much diff to you, if so I`d have a range of primes + 24 105..

It helps if you understand what makes a better lens. at f8 you may not see much, if you shoot wide open and want better colour rendition, edge sharpness, contrast, less aberation and silent motor +++ etc then pay a lil more. this page from canon has a lil info but many are satisfied with the lower priced model

Sounds a bit like a dry joint or similar, I`d just send straight to canon and let them sort it..

G`day...used sigma 15 30 heavily for a while, FL suited an less distortion than ef 16 35, diaphram units had a habit of going due to loosening flex boards. 3rd one came back crook sent it back to CR K in Melb and they replaced it 12mth outta warr. might pay to buz em and ask..

I did not up from 5dmk1>mk2 cause there seemed no improvement to AF, now its seems the 7d is better, so the next FF may be? Nearly all our pro work is flash so thats where I`m hoping for some improvements, Has there been any with 7d ?

Interesting how one thinks when your back is against the wall. I would have thought 4 images merged together may have been easier than butchering a smaller image circle lens for a larger format. But if pro will just get another lens later to keep tax down, x1.6 >x1.3 not a huge amount tho. certainly did not have backup FL. problably ok for a bit of fun ;-)

G`day Bill, hope the dust clearin for you down there, got into everything this way

What Rob says, the cameras which do 50iso lose some DR this may suit some potraiture but not much else to me anyway.

-

Centre focus point only tho as it does not cover all points, still only ever used that one myself

This not take efs lenses is nothing, the Tamron 17 50 f2.8 works well on these cameras and faster. I made a good living with the D30 all low light such as nightclubs still works fine. I jumped to 20d and was like night and day. the D60 files are smilar size to 10D, but I agree if the 10D in good nick, save for a later model and go at least 30D with larger LCD and easier to read font (to me anyway) still price seems ok

JDM is a brave and funny man, and one of a few Canon listened to, got his 100% VF. so where`s multi spot meterin

BTW how can someone tell dat the noise engine of 7d similar to 5d from lil 118kb unprocessed jpegs on da web?

1/2 frame sorta flopped with film, certainly become norm this time round, I agree peter, Canon must be trying to claw back the midrange market :)

I have a Tamrom 1.4x TC that works well with all EF lenses inc 28 135 as the body simply does not see it, I use it with 300 f5.6 often with no issues,Not all 1/3 party TC`s are missing these communication pins tho, Steve did you block the extra pins on the canon TC? this also stops the body seein the TC, my guess should be ok well in `AV` anyway. Regarding f8 lenses if available that would be another reason to unjustify the `1` series

Hmm, howed they figure this out? just lookin at DR as some do the 40d has more DR than a 5d which equals a 20d, my 5d I`m sure gives far better results than my 20/40d`s. the 40d has the smaller pixel pitch for light gathering so is it more dependant on in body software...

The battery capacity decreases continually over time, charging time shortens but still shows full, rather like a glass of water with sediment building up in the bottom, it can still be filled but less water to use. HTH

Have you tried operating the camera with no lens attached? this may eliminate the lens if the body still has a delay. I have seen similar also with a defective lens diaphram, simply tested by putting at f16 and pressing DOF preview will close it down and darken the viewfinder. An old battery could affect the operation if exhausted but generally switch on and off recovers enough for maybe 1 or 2 shots. You don`t mention if you actually get an image?

Self Timer? clean contacts..does the same with manual focus? luv one of them lenses where you get the f2.8 version LOL

@Bob, apologize for the lazy edit, was 1am here and been on a site that uses a lot of funny text, doubt I`ll ever get used to it.

@ Peter, Nice to be skeptic but if you don`t open your mind and look at whats happening around, then the world passes by unnoticed. I run a pro photo biz and like Dick worked many years for media & newspaper, now sticking to normality. I have 8 Canon slrs 2 canon P&S couple of oly`s and 2 blads, The only association I`ve had with Pentax is early 1970`s, a spotmatic + 50 1.4 when I started weddings with it and a yashica 124G. I advised my cousin not to buy a Pentax. That was before I looked at it. My feeling was, Are the folks at Pentax taking more notice of this forum than Canon? I`m sure when Canon impliment some of these features they will be superior but there has been a lot of talk about When. even the K20d had features to draw beginners to it. I also have too much tied up for change. Many as myself were disappointed when FD went to EOS but stuck with it, whereas other brands as like the K7 accepts all pentax lenses. Geez even panasonic has given FD a go. My reason for the post was to show what Pentax is offering at a low price so if one wishes can ask canon, why can`t we have too. I`m sticking to 5D but this sure looks ok as a vacation cam. doubt I`ll get one..cheers

Hi Keith, mainly cause there are many features in this package that canon users have been asking for a while. If pentax can, why not canon? I`ve been usin canon since `80`s T90`s and I see no reason why they can`t match the feature sets of their rivals..cheers

Not sure if this brought up yet on this forum, ,y cuz just ask me which Dslr to get and with all the Canon/Nikon this an that gave him some options.BTW his 1st D as he has a kodak P&S and K1000 film. Then he said but I like the Pentax K7 looks. Never looked that way before. Hmm sure has a swag of new features, seems to be aimed at toppling the 50D good and proper. I wonder if Canon are holding off the 60D just like the 5D2 took so long with the HD vid? and yeah my cuz likes the HD vid and lens correction and 100% VF and dedecated LV button and manual meter and 77 segment meterin 11 AF points 9 cross 2 wideangle ext mic etc all here

Be nice if canon matches this one at a competitive price..

-

Try center AF point only, the AF point determines whether 1 or more LED`s of the AF assisr is used. My memory might be faillin tho...

Wow..what an awesome possum MP, don`t see the AB`s in Oz, how much for powerpack and what sorta milage you get..thanks

G`day, not sure if this info ok, still got a couple of 300TL`s from T90 days and problably a few out there still got them. On a D30 and 20D they`ll fire but iffy, I found a lot of fiddling around on the hotshoe to get them positioned, on the 40D was ok, on a 5D tho it never missed a beat in TTL, Hi and low modes..HTH
