Hi,
I've been knocking this around in my head for a while and eventually did a test of a similar idea, but wanted to
reach out the the community here and pick your brains.
Here's my idea: I'm doing a publicity photo for a high-energy rock band.
1. The band is at a party and there are tons of people around them.
2. I want the band to be sharp, and still.
3. The people around them are blurred, in-motion.
4. The people around them are the band as well.
Meaning that, I'd like to make a composite where the band is the focal point in their normal dress, and then have
them change wardrobe and to make it look as if they're the other party-goers as well.
Should I just shoot with Photoshop layers in mind and then start blending?
- blank shot of the background
- key shot of band
-multiple shot of "partygoers" in different positions
I've really only done one other heavy composite, but it was very simple and I'd like to get some feedback on this
idea to see how you all would approach this.
Thanks!
Evan

I'm shooting these leather bags, and can't seem to get around a few hot spots
here and there. Any tips?

Update: I ended up getting a set of eFilm rechargeable AA's and they're pretty good, I must say. They charge quick and provide a whole day's worth of fires at an alarmingly fast recycle time. Although I have no basis of comparison, I'm pretty satisfied.

Hey everybody, I'm looking to go for rechargable in lieu of constantly having to
throw away spent alkalines. It feels too wasteful to be throwing out 10
batteries per week- I shoot a ton, and use the SB-800.
Does anyone have any experience using rechargables in this flash? Any
recommendations besides getting a quantum pack?
Thanks, EVan

I've just bought a Canon 10D. In reading the manual, it says that when
coming in from the cold, you should, when you're about to come inside,
seal your camera in a plastic bag to keep condensation from forming
inside the camera body. I contacted Canon via phone, and they said the
same thing.
Obviously, when I'm outside in a blizzard, there will be more chance
for moisture than if I'm out in the "just plain cold."
My question is, where do I draw the line? And what are your
experiences with this? I'd like to hear from as many people as possible.
Thanks!

James,
What do you mean by "using QImage for your setup?"

I'm about to get a 2000p, and I'd like to know what other people
think the good papers are.

When something has an interpolated resolution of "whatever," what
exactly does that mean, and why is it so much higher than the
regular resolution?
What do I have to do to get that interpolated res?

Well, I live in Chicago, and there is no cheap way to do anything. My alma mater (Columbia College) won't let me use their awesome digital lab even after I've graduated and paid tens of thousands of dollars for an education that I can't implement.
All bitterness aside, all I need right now is a scanner that'll let me print a little bigger than 8x10 for a print portfolio. The rest would be used for web graphics and CD portfolio. I suppose I could go for a dedicated 35mm scanner, since I have way more 35 than medium format negs. Anything beyond than is basically not nessesary right now. i have friends that have top-o-the-line equipment, but I simply have so much work to do, I NEED to be able to work on it whenever I have ANY time to do so. So, I need my own stuff, and right now all I need is the essentials.
Oh yeah, and to a previous poster: I know you looked at my previous posts, but those Nikon and Fuji digital cams aren't mine; I posted those threads for my job(I'm a digital studio photographer aching to get the hell out of the day-to-day drab of product shots and move on to better things like being being a broke freelance photojournalist).

Ian,
My entire experience as a photographer has also been on a meager budget. Anyone can get by with the bare essentials, and anyone can go crazy with a credit card. Too bad this rude person has to cut others down because of his lack of confidence.
But back to subject, I think a flatbed might be good for me, since I'd like to be able to scan medium format as well. It's not nessesary, but it looks like I might be able to go that route for about the same amount of money.
My next question is: How much quality am I sacrificing by using a flatbed scanner as opposed to a normal 35mm film scanner?
-
Grant,
I apologize, but I sincerely didn't know that I had to be a rich asshole in order to grow as a photographer.

I simply can't throw down big money right now for even a midrange

I've just handed in yet another application for a newspaper
internship. This most recent application is an updated one, as I am
constantly refining my presentation.
My question is, and this is directed at staff newspaper
photographers, and others who have done internships; How many
internships does one normally have to complete before being
considered for a staff position?
And, are there any tips anyone can give about how to approach the
employer after I've handed in my materials? Should I call after a
week? Should I leave them alone? The instructions for application
said not to call, but I think that's weird.
Any insight?

I don't want to spend more than $400.
-
Yeah...I suppose "inexpensive" would be better, wouldn't it?
How about the Canoscan 8400F and the Epson perfection 4180?
-
...but I understand that you get what you pay for, most of the time.
Are there any cheaper scanners (under $400) that can scan meduim
format?
OR----
Are there any modifications I could do to a non-medium format
scanner to accomodate the larger size?

Why does the cursor in Photoshop 6 randomly change when using tools?
I'll be touching up like, 100 pics, and using the burn tool on
almost all of them. Most of the time, the cursor on this tool is a
hollow circle, depicting the size of the brush you've configured. I
like this, because I know where I'm going on the image. BUT,
sometimes, at random, the cursor will be a simple cross-hair, not
the sized circle. This is a problem, because you have no frame of
reference as to how big your brush is.
Does anyone know why this happens?

the last post totally lost me. What are all those abbreviations?

So, you say that you can only use matte papers with this printer? Are there any other limitations i should know about?
-
I've recently dismissed my purism, and would like to start using a
digital darkroom. I have some friends that swear by the Epson 2200,
and it seems like an OK deal, but I'm concerned about the permanence
of the images. I know the inks for this printer are supposed to be
archival, but is this really the case? And how does the quality
compare to other printers in the same price range?

I just got this Fuji S1 pro as a backup digital camera for an Ebay
business, and it's not like the Nikon D1 I already have, where you
access the format option through the main menu. I haven't even been
able to record one image!
Can anyone give me a lead?
