  1. Kai,

Just returned from a 2 weeks trip to Madeira. You probably want to rent a car if you want to do some walking or see something from the Island. Expect to pay something like 25 - 30 Euro per day for a small car. Regarding hikes along levada's, stay away from the one's near villages as they are polluted and you always hear the sound of construction works which are going on. They seem to be rebuilding the whole island at the moment. Lot's of tunnels are currently being drilled. The interrior is indeed the nicest area to walk and drive arround, although it will take you at leats 1.5 hours to get there.

I would recommend Ponta de S. Lourenco, Pico Do Areeiro and a drive towards Rabacal via Boca da Encumada when the weather is good as you otherwise will be driving through the clouds.

I took a 70-200/2.8 with me but I don't think I used it ever. Most of the time I used a wide angle zoom 16-35 and a normal 28-105 zoom to shoot scenery shoots. I think it doesn't hurt to take the 200 lens with you. See for your self whether you would use it and otherwise leave it behind in your hotel room.

  2. David,

Unfortunately I can't answer your questions but as an owner of the same printer I'll be interested if others can. It could be useful to know whether you use the "print with preview" option in PS and whether you selected the correct profile in the color management section. In addition, which paper type do you use?

Myself, I'm quite satisfied with the profile for Epson Premium Glossy Paper (although Epson doesn't deliver them with their printers in Europe and one has to download them selves). On the other hand the results I have with Epson's Matte Heavyweight are quit bad. I'll loose lot of detail in the black and greens. Like to know whether this could be solved with a custom printer profile or whether the R800 is indeed not that good on Matte papers as Dry Creek Photo mentions. I appreciate any comments on this as well feedback on using Lustre type of papers.

  3. Hello Calvados,

Eye-One can only profile one display for each video card you have installed on your system. If you have two monitors, but only one video card, you should choose one monitor (likely your LaCie) as your color critical display and leave the other for tools, palletes and other non color critical stuff.

I suggest that you callibrate your monitor which you consider the color critical once more as things might got messed up in case the wrong profile for the wrong monitor got loaded after you callibrate two monitors.

  4. I am trying to get familiar with the process of handling, importing

and converting raw picture files shot with the Canon 10d.

One of things I noticed and Im a bit disappointment of is the fact

that I cant import my CRW files in Photoshop Elements 2.0. Do I

something wrong or do I need a plug in of which I am unaware? On

adobe.com, I can only find a raw plug-in for CSAny suggestion???

So I went the alternative route and used Canons File Viewer Utility

to save my raw file as a 16 bit TIFF and open it in PSE2. However

when I do so Ill get the following message in PSE2 This program is

in an unsupported color depth. Convert to default color depth? Is

this due to the fact that my video card /monitor allows only 24 bit,

or does PSE2 not support 16 bit TIFF?

Do you also struggle with these issues and how did you solve them?

I.e. do you all use CS with the RAW plug-in or do you have a nice 36

or 48 bit video card and monitor or do you work in 8bit despite the

fact that the camera supports 12 bit color per channel?
