  1. I agree on all points. I have recently swapped my D2H for a D2Xs and the difference in image quality has far exceeded my expectations. I suppose its the difference between 4 and 12 mega pixels, but wow!!

My only grip is with the Capture NX and Pictue Project software. I am using the trial version at the moment, but they won't allow me to open NEF files. It might be because its a trial version, but if thats the case, whats the point of having a trial, if you can't trial it?. The trial version also won't connect to the nikon server for updates.

    Anyone else found this.

  2. Hi,

I have the 80-200 f2.8 af/d 2 touch with tripod collar an dthe hood is the HB-7. All you wil need to check for is to see whether your lens takes the bayonet mount HB-7 or one with a filter thread.

These are super lenses aren't they!

  3. I have a query regarding the quality of optics and how they vary between

manual focus AIS lenses and AF lenses.

I particulalry refer to the 55mm f2.8 AIS micro nikkor and the 60mm f2.8 AFD

    micro nikkor.

Using these on an AF Digital body i wondered which one people consider deliver

the best results. I have been happy using the AIS 55mm lens on manual focus

and other than being autofocus, wondered if I would see any benefit from

changing to a 60mm AFD micro.

All your comments are, as always most welcome.

  4. Hi All,

I am in LA from the UK this weekend and am thinking about a buying a

flashgun (either Sb-600 or Sb-800) for my D2h.

    I have a few questions:

Can the SB-800 and older Sb-26 (which i still have from my F5) work

well together with the sb-26 as a slave firing into a brolly box?

Does the same answer apply to the SB-600 which is much cheaper?

Where's a good place to buy in LA, I can only really shop this

saturday and pretty centrally as I am using public transport.

Oh, and i'll be using the setup mainly for portaits and still life.

    thanks

  5. Can anyone tell me from what serial number the D1x had the buffer

upgrade included? I know it can be retro fitted to older ones, but

wondered which are the newer ones with it in for sure!

I am thinking about getting the D1x but don't want to buy one

    without the buffer upgrade,

    many thanks

  6. Hi all, i hope you can help me here.

I have chance to get an as new D1x body for the same price as a new

    D70s body.

What are your thoughts here. This will be my first digital camera. I

    currently use an F5.

    Many thanks,

  7. I have the 80-200 f2.8 AF/D lens and was considering the newer AFS version when it came out. My dealer queried the value of me swapping an already excelent lens and offered to lend me the new AFS lens to try without obligation to buy ( I have a very good dealer ). I tried it and decided to stick with my original lens, which already has fast autofocus on my F5, and save a bucket load of money in the process. Money I spent on a new manfrotto monopod and 60mm micro. Check out the rediculously px values on even very new kit.

I refuse to join the bandwagon of people swapping for the latest model until there is a percievable difference in performance that will improve my photography!

  8. Hi Joe,

I have both the SB26 and SB28 and have used them both with my F5. Save your money and stick with the SB26 which will work perfectly. Just out of interest i actually prefer the 26 to the 28, but this is personal preference related to the buttons/selection etc. i am going to sell the 28 and stick with the 26.

  9. I have also found the 24-120 to be a generally poor performer (lack of sharpness and also quite slow), and rather than change to the VR, I would suggest a better wideangle zoom (17-35) and a mid zoom.

This is what I did, as I thought the Nikon was letting me down. I bought a s/h nikon wideangle off ebay and bought a 28-70 f2.8 tokina atx which just blows the 24-120 nikon away.

  10. This thread has indeed been both useful and entertaining, so here's what I am planning to do. Go to Leo's to see Tia (she sounds worth the visit), save my money for when i am in honh kong, and go on a trip to Victoria and take in a seaplane trip.

PS the comments about eBay are all valid, but sometimes a bargain is just hard to resist. go on you know you've had a look too! (but no replacement for the personal service and expertise).

    This forum is TOP BANANA.

  11. in response to how Vancouver prices compare with those in UK.

    - The UK pound is currently very strong so we get a good deal generally over here. That said, the prices I have seen today in granville street aren't much cheaper than back home, although as a visitor I could claim back the 7% tax. I did have a look in inter photo on Howe st, and almost bought a 50mm f1.4 nikkor, but the prices there are excluding tax which was a little misleading.

The best deals do appear to be on eBay, but I will be in Hong Kong in august so I'll wait and having a bit of a spree when i get there.

    thanks again,

    regards

  12. Hi folks,

I am over in vancouver from uk for a week and wanted to do some lens

shopping. Whilst there are always the shops advertised in the phone

book, it is always good to know the friendly dealers and where to

get the best buys. I am in downtown vc.

I am after nikon prime lenses.

    ANY IDEAS/recommendations ???

    thanks

  13. I cannot agree with the first respondent. I have used the tokina pro and the sigma hsm lenses as well as the Nikon ED lens on my nikon f5 and I have the following comments to make.

The quality and handling of the tokina is superb and second only to the Nikon lens. It is a robust metal and glass construction, with a metal lens hood and substantial tripod mount. The optics are excellent.

The quality of the sigma hsm lens is also good, but the construction seems less robust and less durable with poorer ergonimics. The sigma does have the high speed autofocus, but the tokina is no slouch either.

Choice is personal, and mine would be tokina over the sigma, becasuse it handles beautifully and optically there was no discernable difference (they are both good optics) but neither are as good as the AFS ED Nikon.

I hope this provides a more balanced appaisal of these 80-200 f2.8 lenses from someone who has used them all. I think it is fair to say that you should go for the one that suits your pocket and whichever feels best to handle, as they will all return fantastic results.

I have no experience of the earlier tokina lens but the ATX Pro (as it is known in europe) should provide better results that its predecessor.
