(Yes it's BW. Yes there is grain.)

Street photography is not about streets

Very good one.

Cool shot John. I think that the glass here actually contributes to the effect; it brings the man at left into the poster. Took me a while to figure it out :)
What amuses me is how often the theme of people on poster vs. a real person comes up in street photography. I have a similar one and was quite fond of it earlier, but now it just feels like a cliche.

Thanks for the comment John.
I actually found that am still looking for form primarily even in a protest setting. Having certain political views of my own, I nevertheless feel mostly indifferent to people surrounding; being aware of them in the sense of personal safety (learnt a lot from your advice in this regard), but not having much empathy. The emotions come later, when I review the negs.
It probably helped to see this particular shot. People were laughing, cursing and shuffling around, but this arrangement just begged for a shot.
Cheers,
Eugene.

I second your observation. These days I always carry the camera in hand, prefocused, and if notice anything interesting shoot right away. The composition, the angle and the distance can be not perfect, but more often than not by the time I get to the best position the moment is gone.

Thanks Alex.
Yes, there's a flare on the face and it is indeed curable with some burning. I didn't do any serious postpocessing with the shots yet, so all these are pretty much as they were on film.

Indeed he is funny from aside, but not when you have to live by his visions every day. Turkmenbashi is even more amazing, but I'd hate to be his citizen.

It's ok. Even here I know several people who like him.

Vladimir, see the other photos in this folder, they have the crowd you want to see.

Sorry, I don't crop my PJ shots. Besides, the fact of the arrest is still visible enough.

Yep, could be a part of the 'mystery look' too.
That reminds me of one old lady who is known for her prohpetic skills, whom I visited along with my family member. Materialistic me was feeling uneasy when she expanded on my personal history with very concrete details she couldn't know, and made some falsifiable predictions (not of the usual "you'll have your ups and downs" kind). She looked pretty ordinary and unimpressive though, a typical babushka.
BTW John, is my mail getting through to you?
-
She looks downright creepy. Was that a makeup on her eyes? It looks a lot like a sympthom of kidney damage.

It is :) Maybe makes it a poor shot from a journalism standpoint, but it attracts the looks.
It is good though that the rubber baton wasn't higher in the frame.

Thank you Nicholas.
Yes, she is a real nun, gathering donations for a local church (you can see the part of the donation box at left). It is not exactly candid, as I was shooting openly: I couldn't zone-focus, as it was done with the manual focus 50/1.8 lens wide open.

Thanks for the link Eugene, they've got good coverage.
I have a couple of rolls with better shots from this protest waiting to be scanned: this one is ac tually a pretty random hit, as I've used my P&S digital to meter exposure. Hope to get the scans by Monday.
