    I might have titled this view "A Ladder to Climb". It is a good example of why you should think out of the box. I find this view much more interesting than the conventual one whold be.

    I like the photo as posted. The cropped version that was posted has much less impact that Jochen's original. I get a feeling of aloneness in the original that is missing the the crop. If the lighting was balanced, the shot could look more like a studio study. A reflector adding a small amount of light while maintaining the mood might be ok.

     

    I think the way John Alton used light conveyed emotion.

    I like the composition. I would have prefered a different balance of the background and foreground. Expose the scene + 1/2-1 stops and lower the flash/reflector by some. To me the mother's face is over exposed. I don't think you blew out the face so, maybe some PS work could re-balance the scene. If you were to adjust the whole image to tone down the face, the background would be too dark. If the scene was taken at sunset with just the sun for illumination, a diffusion panel between the sun and the M/D would have balanced the scene.
