I like the photo as posted. The cropped version that was posted has much less impact that Jochen's original. I get a feeling of aloneness in the original that is missing the the crop. If the lighting was balanced, the shot could look more like a studio study. A reflector adding a small amount of light while maintaining the mood might be ok.
I think the way John Alton used light conveyed emotion.

I like the composition. I would have prefered a different balance of the background and foreground. Expose the scene + 1/2-1 stops and lower the flash/reflector by some. To me the mother's face is over exposed. I don't think you blew out the face so, maybe some PS work could re-balance the scene. If you were to adjust the whole image to tone down the face, the background would be too dark. If the scene was taken at sunset with just the sun for illumination, a diffusion panel between the sun and the M/D would have balanced the scene.

I had a request for an image of the sleigh and team with the view from
this hill. The owner was hosting a winter carnival on President's
Day. Of course it snowed on President's Day. I stayed and took some
images. My first time photographing in a snow storm. Would you have
stayed?

I seem drawn to this location. The water is smooth and reflects the
sky well.

A friend asked me to photograph her families sleigh ride after
Christmas. This shot was taken as they were returning after the very
cold ride.
