I have been using Canon lenses and bodies for almost 6 years now but
only recently purchased a digital SLR, Canon 20d (I guess I am still
new to digital). I have never had exposure problems with either my EOS
5000 or my EOS 3. However, I was caught off-guard when the histogram
leaned 1/3 or 2/3 stops to the left.
My monitor is OK and does not need further calibration. The test shots
I took used the 18-55 kit lens and the 28-105 USM lens. I used
center-weighted and partial metering in P, Tv and Av modes for these
shots with AWB, and I still need to increase the compensation either
up to 2/3 or 1 full stop. Some tweaking with Custom Color Temperature
and Custom WB helped a little bit, but this basically implies that the
Auto shooting modes are unusable.
I am not sure if this is expected of every single 20d body. If it is
not, what can I do to solve this problem besides dialing the EC?
Should I send to a Canon Service Facility for some further checking?
Thanks for your answers/comments.
Canon 20d underexposure...please help
in Canon EOS Mount
Posted
I guess I missed some details. One example of an underexposed shot would be on a standing tungsten lamp against a white wall, but I still don't understand why I need to compensate up to 2/3 of a stop, since my EOS 3 did a very good job of metering the shot.
Just got off the phone with a Canon tech support. He said as long as the compensation does not go beyond 1.5 the camera is OK. I know this sounds a bit far-fetched for the average (and poor) photographer, but the tech support also said that, of course obviously, an L-series lens that could go beyond f/2.8 would do a better job, and that my current lenses are just average...I was tempted to retort by saying "Sell 3 L-series lenses for $100 and I'd get half a dozen of those" *Sigh*
