I currently have an old used 300mm f4 ED IF lens that I use with my
D70. I mostly love to shoot nature and wildlife photos and use this
lens more than any other one. However this is a somewhat slow
focusing lens and tends to search a lot. I have noticed Nikon is now
offering a $200 rebate on the newer 300mm f4 and is making this very
tempting. I see that the newer lens has afs so I'm assuming that it
would be faster than the old one. Just wondering if anyone is
familiar with both of these lenses and could help me decide if it's
really worth spending more money and trade in for the newer one, and
if it's an all around better lens and most importantly to me, a lot
better focusing.
Thanks,
Steve

Yes, I do have the non D lens that takes the front 82mm filter. I too was worried with having the D70, which being a lower end digital slr that it may not have the juice to make much of a difference if I did get the AFS lens. I have gotten some super sharp shots with the lens I have now and really love it a lot but I also have missed a few good shots with it's slowness and frequent searching.
Thanks so much for the comments, this has been very helpful and insightful. I'm not a professional photographer or one that makes money at this so it's not a crtical decision in that stand point. But if I'm going to pay close to a grand for something, I'd like to think it over pretty good.
I'll take my time and weigh the options. Thanks again!!
