  1. I assume that you are referring to the current state of the art digital systems as compared to current state of the art film based systems. The short answer is that the two are comparable at low ISO/ASA speeds, but digital has increasingly apparent advantage with increase in ISO/ASA values.   2. It is not correct to say that raw files don't get compressed; actually they are compressed, just that the compression algorithm is loss-less. All information is regained upong de-compression.

     

    Jpeg typically uses loss-full compression, so that some information is lost upon each compression-decompression. Newer standards for Jpeg include lossless algorithms.

     

    The RAW format is used to store the information exactly as it comes off the imaging sensor, without interpolation, color-correction, anti-aliasing (although this is not always the case), etc.

     

    The main difference between RAW and NON-RAW images is that the later have undergone in-camera processing.
