1. Mr Burke

Good luck in getting a resolution to this before Christmas Eve. You appear to have been very unlucky indeed. I

understand why you wanted to raise your theory of perceived post-climatic / per-holiday market pressures on Canon

    quality control.

I also fully resonate with your frustration at an unusually early Sabbath closing on the Friday in question.

May you have many more years enjoyment of your new gear when you finally get it replaced.

  2. I would agree with James Smith in the previous post and ignore the advice about buying FD lenses, as it keeps the prices down for those of us who are already in that game!

I also have an EOS630 Body, but little used as I also had a 10D on order at that time (2004). Use your EOS lenses on

    something like that.

  3.
I had the 1.8 but mine failed about a year ago, perhaps due to pressure on the front element at some stage - a reported build weakness I believe. I was very happy with its general performance.
I bought a 2nd hand 1.4 from A***** and have also suffered from fairly regular AF issues - this detracts from its useability, however it's performance in other respects has pleased.
I would go for the 1.8 for cost-performance.

  4. Nate.

I judt bought the 40D and 28-135 kit from Amazon, a couple of weeks back and now they have reduced it by a further $200. Like someone has written, the 28-135 extra cost is only about $180. I have found it a pretty good lens and used it during my business trip in the States ( I am Australian). I recieved the camera on the morning of an airshow and used the 28-135 for static shots and the 70-200 f4 I had carried wiith me for the rest. I have been pleasantly surprised by the 28-135. I also have the 17-40L and rate that lens very highly.

The 40D makes sense if you plan to shoot wildlife and sport as I sometimes do. It's an upgrade fro my 10D that I have used for 4 years, but don't underestimate the strength of quality glass. Good luck with your choice.

  5. I bought a new 24-85 with a 10D body back around Jan 04. I also purchased the proper Canon lens hood. From the start its interference fit caused severe stress to the lens-body when mounting the hood. This loosened off in time but had also cause significant wobble to the assembly of the lens and in March 06, I then found that the 24-85 was stuck and would not zoom wider than 50mm - useless. I was quite pleased with the quality of images produced by the lens, but clearly not as good as a 70-200f4L or even the little 50f1.8.

My beef is with the very poor construction and the fit of the hood - I now have a useless lens and will be buying a 17-40L.

  6. I have the 10D, 28-85, 50 f1.8 and 70-200 f4L. Just bought the last two lenese and very

pleased with all 3 lenses and of course the body. Now using the 70-200 f4L more and

more since it's performance is so gratifying - great colour and resolution and AF speed/

smoothness. I was a long time Pentax owner. the Z-1 I bought in '94 had their budget

28-80AF lens. The Canon lenses are so much better. Love the fineness of graduated tones

that the Canon captures in cloudscapes, etc.

Go the Canon route - I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

  7. Andrea and Mark,

I am using an iBook G4 and cannot locate the Graphic Converter app. I also find iPhoto

only mildly useful. I am now using Capture One LE to do RAW file workfloe processing

from an EOS10D. When I select the "save for web" option in PS in order to post to

photo.net, i am getting horrible de-saturated colurs and colour shifts. I don't know if this

is associated with the embedded 10D colour profile in the TIFs from Capture One - the

TIFs look great but not the jpgs. If I could locate Graphic Converter presumably I would

have another option for creating jpgs. - thanks for any help
00AMuS-20810984.jpg.8f0a3de50cfb3a5560604a193a9539c2.jpg

  8. I'm particularly interested in this thread because I too had all Pentax gear (albeit only the 1 crappy (IMO) 28-80 KA lens, rest being manual focus good quality Pentax or 3rd party K lenses.

I rejected the istD because I read the reviews. A large factor for me too was never being happy with the 28-80 FA lens that came with my Z-1. I loved the camera but the lens....

Anyway, Like Amanda, born in UK, but now an Aussie, I switched to an EOS10D, buying through Adorama in NYC and saving quite a few A$100 even after shipping and duty. Have only had the EOS10D a few days but a few of the shots and the 24-85 lens have reassured me I made the correct decision. Please excuse long and somewhat rambly post.
