  1. Nadine,

Regarding the 380EX and the 550EX, I borrowed the 550 and did not have the chance to test it now (although my friend says it works). I will make some more test photos but I'm not sure whether I can make some with the 550EX. This makes me a little conservative about using the 550EX. I had once the bad experience that I used my 380EX with photos in the night and the negatives were black, only the preflash did fire, not the main flash (which you cannot see if you look through the viewfinder).

Ok, so I will not use filters, this makes live also a little easier.

    If already read photonotes.org/eosflash.

    Thanks a lot.

  2. Bill,

Thank you for the detailed answer, I will definitely make some more photos at the location before the wedding.

Shooting at 1/60 f/5.6 sound sensible to me. What I'm still unsure about is how to deal with light that is not daylight. In the restaurant will definitly be normal bulbs and it will be in the evening. Should I just rely on the light of the flash as white light?

  3. Hello all,

I'm a (at least somehow experienced) photo amateur that came into the

situation of being responsible for the wedding photos at my friends

wedding (Yes, I have read the Wedding FAQ, but after seriously asking

my friend if he is really sure that I should make the photos and

because they run on rather low budget and of course because I want to

try it, I decided to do it). So I read a lot of contributions in this

forum and already made some test photos, but there are still some

things not clear to me. Maybe some of you could help me here.

My equipment is an EOS 7E with a 380EX flash and some lenses (50mm,

85mm, 28-90 consumer zoom). I also have backup equipment (EOS 300,

550EX), so I think this should be ok for me.

First of all I'm unsure about which lenses to use, especially in the

church. I though about using my 50/1.8 and my 85/1.8 to get enough

light, but this makes me of course a little inflexible, since changing

the lenses is time consuming (at least 10 sekunds), so a nice shoot

may be lost. Also I'm unsure whether 1.8 will give to less depth of

field, I once already had the problem that with my 85/1.8, the second

person was sharp and the first relativley unsharp. What would you

recommend me as minimum apature? I think of shoothing in Av mode,

maybe in manual with a maximum of 1/30 maybe 1/45 (I think this should

be ok for the 85mm also). Or should I just use the consumer zoom

(starting at aperture 4) because it makes me more flexible and I will

not need the large aperture, anyway?

I also think about the quality of light, is there any sensible way to

shoot without flash in the church or even more problemetic, in the

restaurant afterwards? I worry a lot about the color of the light. Or

do you only make BW pictures with available light? Should I use

filters or should I rely on the fact that my flash is giving enough

"white" light and that the other light may not disturb to much?

Especially, outdoors, the flash may be very helpful if I take a photo

with the couple somewhere in the shadow (to have more diffuse light)

but the background is lighted by the sun. So do you think I should

make ALL photos with flash? Outdoors and also indoors (there because

of the lack of enough light?) I think about bying such a small softbox

for the flash, is it worth it?

The last important thing is the compensation for the flash and for the

exposure. I made some test-photos and found out (as the people

mentioned in several threads), that compensation is necessary for

portraits, if only the white dressed bride or the black dressed groom

is on the photo (nearly no background). But the question is, should I

use exposure compensation AND flash exposure compensation? Can you

give me advice? I think this is an essential issue.

I hope you don't mind that there are always people like me that have

more or less the same questions, but I could really not find the

answers for my in the discussions before.

    Thanks in advance
