1. Matt,

If the face is perfectly exposed but the pace is over exposed, then I thought you reduce the light of the skirt (if possible)

and keep same exposure settings or increase light on face (if co rolling light on skirt not possible) and decrease exposure

using smaller aperture (because using flash) or nd filter. Am I missing something?

I understand the exposure on face might still be controlled through ettl/similar technology. Is that the reason for your contrary advice?

  2. Rust is spreadable. Unlike some other

oxidations, rust is powdery and falls off. Also it

acts as catalyst for more oxidation.

If it rusted, clean it throughly and keep it away.

    Similar to fungus.

I don't how close of a friend you are, but rust

and fungus are not friendly to give

  3.
Hi Folks,
I am trying to figure how best to utilize my new dual monitor setup. I have two monitors which are unequal specifications. One is a HP 5K 10 bit 27 inch color monitor that i got to do lightroom work and the second is my older samsung monitor that is smaller than 1080P resolution and is 23 inches in size.

I finally got 10 bit color working on the HP monitor and now i am trying to figure out how best to utilize both my monitors. What do you folks do?

I have seen the videos on how you "CAN" use the monitors, but i want to get to know how real folks actually use them :)

Thanks

  4.
Hi Folks,
I am embarking on my first wedding and i need help with the contract. Till now i have been doing small events only and so havent really been doing contracts other than a simple email etc.
Even though this event is also small enough to be in my comfort zone from a photography perspective, i do think the emotions run high for weddings. So I want to have a contract.

I pulled some sample contracts etc from the web and from the Best business practices for photographers, but I am not comfortable doing this myself. I dont even know what aspects to put into the contract.

I live in NJ. Can you folks refer me to a lawyer who understands photography business and maybe willing to help a newbie craft a simple contract?

Thanks

  5.
If you are used to folder based organization, just import into lightroom and say leave in current location. The only thing is in the future when you want to moves stuff around just do it in lightroom and you should be fine. The same things you can do in the folder interface in the mac can be done inside lightroom and so the learning curve is non existent.
If do end up moving/ deleting photos outside of lightroom then it can be a hassle to refind them and link them up again, but t is doable. Just double work.

  6.
Thanks for the responses folks.
Rob never thought about doing remote desktop! That is a great idea. Need to think of it and try it to see performance. I just googled and found that i can remote even from my ipad.

I also saw Lightroom Mobile get released yesterday.

Finally i see some light at the end of the tunnel!

  7.
I have been using lightroom for my processing of photos for a few years with great results and a simplified process flow. But some things are changing in life (Became a dad) and am no longer able to spend lots of time in front of the main computer. I can still spend time on a secondary computer (Laptop) more easily sitting in my family room (The main computer is downstairs in the office).

I am trying to figure out a process that can work with lightroom and two computers. All the research i have done on the web led me to a process flow of exporting from the main computer as a catalog with smart previews and then moving that to the secondary computer and then merging the changes back on the main computer. I just feel that this is a very tiresome process and not easy to split doing the work on multiple machines in parallel.

I am hoping that some of you folks working in bigger processing places have a better setup that allows multiple users to work on the same catalog? Or atleast have a easier flow to work on photos at the same time.

I am exploring alternative ideas
1. Putting the photos and catalog on a normal NAS and accessing it from lightroom. I am reading that lightroom doesnt really like having the catalog on the network. So am scared of this proposition. I also understand to do this effectively, i have to do a volume mount from the NAS into the local filesystem to trick lightroom to think it is on local storage. I have been doing this for years now with the lightroom cache folder. I have the cache folder to be actually mounted on an SSD to speed up the process but kept the catalog on the local RAID volume (Which is also the boot volume) to avoid the network issues in lightroom.
2. Putting the photos on a ISCSI based SAN (Drobo my favorite SAN has options for it). The problem i see with that approach is that while this will allow me to have the main storage off the computer and lightroom will be completely unaware of it being on the network. I am reading that with ISCSI i can have the LUN(The storage partition in ISCSI) attached to only one machine. This means i really cannot have both my desktop and laptop read the same LUN.
3. Putting on an external drive - I dont consider this as a real option because i cant connect a large enough drive to my laptop without it turing into a cord mess and becoming a desktop on my lap! Also I already have a Drobo that i connect to my main desktop and i use it as a backup (Yes i have another offsite back up also so lets not get into DROBO is not a backup solution). I dont think having another removable media option is the right solution.

I wanted to find out form the experts here if there are any other options i have not been considering and more importantly what your process is specifically that works for you and what didnt work for you in the past.

Please note that I am looking for multiple computer operation but a single user environment and am not looking for multiple user working on the same catalog. So no record level locking is not an issue for me in LR 5. Also please give me pointers on how to avoid the issues and the issues themselves are very well discussed in multiple posts on adobe forums and dont want a rehash of them here.
Some to those discussions are listed here for those who want a background of the issues
8. Till now I was storing my gear in a camera bag and took all my gear for everything. So stored the stuff in the same bag at home.

When my gear spilled over to the second bag, I put my second tier/ specialist stuff in one bag and the rest in the second bag.

Now I am even more constrained and wanted to check how poeple store their gear at home and pack lighter bags for the shoot. Wanted

to find out if tHere is any specialized storage mechanism to help store gear at home other than a big closet?

I dont normally use much of it in a single event and would like to lighten my bag.

    Suggestions please

Moderator: please move this to the appropriate forum if this is not the right place.

  9.
I was scared of he change and was dreading the work needed to do to get it to work like my old site. Sure i had to make some tradeoff as we dont have full control over javascript as we did before but that is a small price to pay for the flexibility. The only thing that I could not do was a full page slide show as on my previous page. Other than that, I am set!

It took me only a weekend of work too. Try it. It might just surprise you.

  10.
I was planning to buy the Sony RX100 when the good folks alerted me to the pending release of the RX100 M2. The new camera has been released and the price is now $100 more than what i hoped for.
While I can stretch to that is needed, I wanted to get an opinion on options again with a new set of criteria since the last post the requirements have somewhat changed. I want to make sure i spending the 3 quarters of the grand sensibly.
Thanks for all the help, and here are teh requirements in the sequence of importance
1. Quick focus. I have tried in the last few days to use an elcheapo canon A series camera for taking shots and the baby always moves by the time the camera focusses and takes the shot. While i am not expecting fast focus like on the 1DX, I would like to know which of the mirrorless cameras have made the most strides towards focus speeds?
2. Ease of use - I want a mode that will take the photos using scene assits or similar technology where the camera tries to identify the scene/people and take the photo with the best setting. I want the exposure to give priority to faces. We are dark skinned (Brown and not black) and normal shooting has most of the photos underexposing the faces in general on the old A series. My wife is not going to be fiddling with settings. So many knobs for settings is not a big necessity. I do want the abilty to take RAW in this mode. I will set it up that way and ask the wife to just click or hit the record button for movies.
3. Quick start up. The canon A series one that i had is so slow to start up. By the time we were able to start it the action is over or we have to wait and the camera goes to sleep again. Frustrating.
4. Fast lens. I though i wanted fast lens for the bokeh, but what i realized was the fast lens also helps keep the ISO to manageable levels as we are not using flash and most of the shooting happens indoors where the light is so so for the most part. I realized that bokeh is not great on a point and shoot. Not a big deal. I can live with it. Hopefully the enthusiast camera sensors being bigger will help with this. And assuming this will help with video also :)
5. Good quality at ISO 1600. With the indoors, no flash, evening and night time incandescent lighting we have ISO 1600 seems to be a given for shooting. Which camera is ok at ISO 1600 now? My original Canon 5D was ok at 1600 but i normally avoided it. I am hoping that in the intervening seven years I the technology has improved and has come down to the enthusiast level point and shoots.
Miscellaneous - small size/weight, Not an interchangeable system - prefer a 35 mm equivalent zoom of around 28 to around 75-100, Need ability to take videos at 1080P prefer 24P, but ok with 30P

  11. Thanks for the ideas folks. I will wait for review of the rx100

mkii. I don't want a lens changing system because then I

will get into another of this costly habits of buying the best

lens. I want to stay with canon for that part of satisfaction

and growth. I don't have issues using my canon and goes

nearly everywhere with me. My wife doesn't care about lens

etc. so to protect my sanity and hopefully some cash in the

long run, want to go witha p&s

  12.
Thanks for the responses till now.
I have asked her to pick the camera but she knows that i love cameras and so is leaving the decision to me. She said what would i buy if i was buying for myself!
I told her the price for RX100 and she was ok with it. So the price range has gone up and my choices have become larger - $650 now.
Then she gave her list of criteria - Easy to use, Need to start be ready for the first shot very quickly.
Need to be able to take video.
I wanted Raw also. I should have mentioned i earlier.

G1X is too complicated - too many dials.
Nikon 1 seems good, but i dont want an interchangeable.

  13. Hi folks I have a canon 5d mark III. I am looking for a camera for my wife to photograph and shoot small video of our newborn. She

doesn't want the bulk of my canon. I want to preserve some of the quality I get with my canon gear.

Price range is $300 to max $400.

Zoom range as wide as possible to a zoom of around 135 to 200. I do not want a super zoom. My canon is used with max wide lens of 24

mm. I think for this a max wide of 28 to 30 is sufficient

Good green mode, semi automated p mode preferable.

Video needs are for you tube quality pictures and possible incorporation into a first year blue ray I am making. My main video is from

canon HV 20 which gives HDV quality 1440x1080 with1.33 width pixels. Anything equivalent or not too bad from it is good.

It should be small and good touch screen menu preferable. She is confused by my 5d.

I don't care about brand as much. I am not going to try to use my canon lens on it. If a point and shoot is good, I am ok with it and don't

need an interchangeable lens system. Actually prefer fixed lens.

Looked at Sony rx100 but it is out of price range. Same with canon g1x and g12.

What other good options and other brands?

  14.
This is when you fall back to the really old style photographs. With the guy behind the girl sho is sitting in a chair. Think 1900s style. That is why those kind of wedding photos are very much still in vogue in India which has a high % of arranged marriages. I know, my wedding was like that.

You can ask the groom to hold a pose of the hand above the girls shoulder but not touch her - yes it is true i have seen many photogs do this in India. Have the girl and guy stand at an angle with the girl's hand touching the inevitable garlands on the groom. This way it looks they are touching but not really.

The best shots are of the couple playing the wedding games. The games are designed to reduce the inhibitions. So after these games are better times since the bride is normally more open.

These apply to arranged marriage weddings of indian origin atleast (Asian Indian)

  15. Our culture doesn't like taking pictures of new born babies. I am a photographer. So as a compromise we agreed not to

post photos until a later date. So having my photos posted to figure out what I am doing wrong is not a feasible solution.

Also not having flash is reducing my choices and my photos are not coming out the best. Location is our house only and

so struggling to find good light.

  16. Hi folks,

I am a new parent with a baby less than a week old. While I have been trying lots of photos with her I am not satisfied with my work and

would like to get some professional photos done. I live in NJ, USA and would like recommendations of photographers here who do very

stylized works of very young babies.

My wife loves Anne geddes style work, and I thought mistakenly that I might be able to replicate some of those shots but not really

happening. So now scrambling to get some good pictures.
