Can anyone point me in the direction of a good digital b+w infra red
technique?

Thanks heaps for the info and links. Is it better to go for quad blacks or small
gamat because of the tones? ( I guess thats a personal pref thing ) But can the
toned B+W prints be made equally as good on a well profiled
7600,9600,4000 as with small gamat inks. If this is the case would it be better
to use Neutral quad blacks and do any tones with the colour printer. Does
small gamat do the same job as quad blacks and a better job of toned prints
than colour inks?

Does anyone know the best quad black inks and what are the advantages, if
any, over small gamat inks?

Good to see that in other parts of the world labs don't take colour
management seriously! I have the same problem! They think there way is best
and treat us - the photographers - as if we know nothing on the matter. I had to
go to the point of righting my own ICC profiles for the labs and all of there
printers. Now we argue over which printer they'll print on. I had an experience
2 years ago - the lab said "you just balance your monitor to this print". Argue,
Complaint, Argue, Complain and the storey gos on. 1 year ago the lab told me
" If you don't use an ICC profile you'll never get accurate colour" Imagine my
frustration! They are coming around - slowly - keep the presure on them and
maybe we'll see some results in2 or 3 years maybe - lol
Its just stupid - almost all photographers in Aust are digital which is forcing
labs to re-consider there possition on Colour Management. But still on lab has
gone and compressed an SRGB colour space to suit all 6 printers. Result - no
image detail from origional file, poor saturation and greatly clipped colours.
Quite poor considering the printer can print more of the detail and colour.
Thats why I print most of my own - Epson all the way I say.
Epson can print more colour anyway!

I shoot stacks of weddings and the receptions - The best idea is find
something that works and stick to it - keep it simple!!!!!!! I use F5, 20-35
f2.8,SB28. Hasselblad for formals and set up shots, F5 for candid and natural.
400 Portra 120, 400 35mm colour and B+W. Oh and F4 for B+W 35mm
Never swap film speeds as when your working fast YOU WONT MAKE
MISTAKES! You only have one chance! There are no redos!
Reception - Direct flash, Manual,f2.8, 1/8,15,30 with 20-35.
Lens allows you to get into the action which can be very tight. f2.8 will not use
so much flash power so recycle times will be fast and play with the shutter 1/8
is pretty daring but can produce some pretty cool shots but dont rely on this as
you could just have a shit load of blury pics. 30th is pretty safe but will cut a lot
of the ambience. 15 low but cool, 20th is what I use almost all of the time. The
flash will freeze the subject. The ambient will give you warm colour from the
tungsten lights and some movement will ad dynamics!
f2.8 @1/20 wide angle and get into it - most of all - have fun
Cheers
