Hi Bill!
Try this guide to clean your LS5000 -> http://www.pearsonimaging.com/articles/howto/ls5000cleaning.html
I followed it step by step with my LS40 and it worked quite well. The fist steps are little bit different with the LS40, but the essential steps (6 through 10) are nearly the same.
Before cleaning it, I had some nasty Halos around the Highlights, but afterwards the scans worked out perfect ;-)
So, if you're into mechanics/technics a little bit, then go for it... but don't forget to be careful!
Greetings,
Michael
Neutralizing Color Negative film scans

Hi Mendel!
Thanks for your summary... I've heard about this workflow some time ago and find it quite interessting.
I'm trying to get the best out of my color-negatives and find it very hard to meet correct colors.
Now I found a way which leads to nice color rendition and I think, it's similar to your description:

scan the negative as slide or image (as for VueScan) with a thin border,
open your image in PS (or Gimp, or PSP, or... etc.),
open the curves resp. levels dialogue,
select the grey/midtone eyedropper and click on the orange border.

You should get a pretty neutral negative which needs only a litte bit of correction after invertion.

What do you think of it? Am I losing tonal-range with this workflow? Or is it just completely wrong ;-)

Thanks,
Michael
