1.
My Nikon D300 has the intervalometer that I really have used only for a try. It's interesting if you want to shot a flower from dusk to dawn, or other science applications. Probably really few people are interested in, but it's nice to have a feature that one day you may need.

  2.
Ok, my first answer was just for fun, but it's true that we italian pronunce word as they're written.
In any case, I use to say Ni-kon talking to an italian, but to an American I say Nai-kon. I'm trying to find words that I do know the pronunciation which still apply to the word Nikon and "pine" or "time" should work. Do they apply?

  3.
This "Missing operand" issue is really bothereing me! Any solution yet?

sorry to insist;
That wasn't supposed to be in this update. But yes, it's intentional. Our research shows that fewer than 5% of ratings are anything other than the same number twice (3/3 5/5 etc).
5%
my questions are:
1-how many rates given equal 5%
2-in France we have a state-channel on TV call Arte, maybe you know it, this channel represent between 7% ànd 5% of the french TV watchers. Do we have to suppress Arte ? and let people go to TV like everywhere else is working for advertisers
(nb: I am not communist.)

Balthazar you're my mith.

  4.
This 50mm/1.4 is really my favourite lens to make portraits of my babygirl: you need a fast lens to get "clear" baby that is not really a still subject, furthermore to not hurt their sensible eyes you're forced to use the natural light (which by the way make the best portrait) and using such lens make happens thing otherwise "impossible".

Ciao,
5.
I've just checked out and Bhphoto has 8Gb Sandisk Extreme III SD @ 55$. With 220$ you'll get 32GB of space in a very tiny format, i.e. no additional weight to carry around.
Finally if you're running out of space you can always delete the bad shots: I really don't think you (me, everybody of us) can shot 32 Gb of photos (means about 2700 shots in RAW) and all of them are worth a print or to be post here on Photo.net.
By the way I've two 4GB Sandisk CF cards for my D300, and by now it's enough. If needed for a trip I'll sure consider to buy an 8GB or more card but not something bigger and heavier.

Regards,
Vince

  6.
THis is NOT a feature that will add photographic value to a DSLR but for sure will increase the price. Nikon has introduced the recording of movie in the D3s, this means that now on all DSLR will have that nice and really usefull (kidding of course) feature! I really don't need it and I guess who does!

  7.
Thanks everyone for your answers.
For sure I don't want to set up a studio, at least now. I'm not interesting in light set. I really like the look of portrait in natural light, also in dim one, hence the choice for a fast lens.
My idea is to use it for kids, weddings, travel and events (as Brooke says candid portrait)
I understand that those are different subject but seems to me that this kind of focal lenght (80mm) is the best compromise.
Tommy Lee is right, I'm trying to find good excuses to buy the 85/1.4, but if the other version gives the same (more or less) results I'll be very happy to save same money for the next buy.
Thanks again.

  8.
Hi,
I'm an happy owner of a D300 (btw I'm not in business).
My lens are a 50/1.4, the 18-200 DX, and the old&cheap 28-80 and 70-300 bought with my F80.
I'm now looking for a portrait lens, I was thinking of a fixed lens like the 85mm, which actually comes in two version 85/1.8 and 85/1.4. Different in price is not negligible (450$ vs 1200$), and could be an issue.
Which version do you recommend? Or is there any other lens that will meet the following requirement?

affodable price < 1000$ (I know that the 85/1.4 cost more but seems to be a very good lens)

portability, decent weight

good performance (bokeh and sharpness)

speed lens.

Thanks for any comments and suggestions.

  9.
Are We crazy or what?
Leica has just released this M9 and everyone WANT it. It's normal, I wonder which of us do not want the latest toy to play with? Leicas are really nice peace of camera, fancy, incredible image quality (for what I've read about), high German quality and so on, but tomorrow's Leica will be way better than today's M9, as for Nikon and Canon. So who cares?
Be happy with what you have and enjoy taking photos.
BTW, how much will cost an M9, plus some great lens everybody is talkin about. Lowest price I've just checked out for a Leica lens (brand new) @ BHphto is $1250. Of course we can buy used, but when the demand will grow up, the prices will follow. Of course I know this hobby is not cheap, but, please, Leica is not affordable for everyone, yet it's still a niche camera.

  10.
Hi I've been using CF since I moved to digital in 2004 starting with a Nikon 5700, Nikon D70 and now with Nikon D300. I never lost one image till now. For sure using very good brands like LEXAR and SANDISK reduces the risk. I'm currently using the SANDISK Extreem IV 4GB and I'm very happy for the performance.
Consider that with CF like the one I've just mention you can buy also the #brand# FireWire CF reader that is really really fast if don't bother wait some minutes to download several giga of photo.
Ciao.

  11.
More or less I was in a similar situation, I had a D70 since and I wanted to upgrade, the choice in june 2008 was obvious: D300.
D700 just shows up few days after my purchase, but was and is out of my budget, in any case: no regrets!!!
What also makes me upgrade was the chance to sell my D70 to a colleague of mine, who was looking for a "cheap" DSLR, well he makes a bargain since I sold him both the body and the kit lens. Well based on my experience/needs, I really don't need a backup body, I already have a film camera F80 that I seldom use.
What I'm trying to say is that: double check your really needs and if I was you I'll make money with my other body to help me buy a better one or a new lens.
Regards,
12.
I know understand how I've got 15000 views on my best viewed photo back in 2005.
Well, I really concurr with you Lex that if you not critique or rate photos as well as partecipate into forums, you will not grow in number of friends interested in you, but I then have to say that the way the "critique forum" is, is not helping giving everybody a "long" exposure (at least 1 day). You have to scroll the page down since photo are in just one column and this is annoying.
Furthermore if you rate a photo, you have a huge chance to have a list of anonymous rates instead the name of the "saint" that has directly rated the photo or has critiqued it.
Well, the way I use Photo.net in the rating system is to use the "Rate Photo" link and pass photos, rating the one that I like leaving a comment to it, in order to be easily recognized and possibly have the favour back. Actually I'm not so lucky...
In any case I'll keep doing in this way and of course I'll try to improve my shot the most.
Regards and happy new year.
Vince

  13.
Hi,
what's wrong with the rating and viewing system of Photo.net?
I mean, in the very beginning of my subscription I easily get lots of views of my shots, and lots were more then 2000 views in few days.
Today, I barely reach hundred of views on photos that I think were way better then my first one.
Well I know that I'm not a constat and full day rater, but I never been. So what's wrong.
It's frustrating since you think that that shot worth more and nobody pays attention to it. I think that any of us here loves to have their own photos be appreciated, and these means views and rating (bad or good, it's the same if explained).
I'm not begging for more viewing, but I'm questioning the system, if a new viewing method has been issued yielding different "results" from the past.
Cheers,
14.
Hi Vince,
I own a D300, and I'm happy with it. But if I have to suggest TODAY a new camera to a friend I definetely say: between these two, buy a D90.
IQ is pratically the same, you get a lighter body, you save money.
Keep in mind that the D300 is more than a year old, and in this Digital era 1yr it's a lot of time (I hate this continuos Digital innovation that make your new fancy camera old just when you buy it). So stay with some good improvements the D90 has over the D300, loosing some other fancy feature that you probably don't need now.
Once you'll master the basic the step forward something more "complex" will be natural.
Cheers.
15. Hi, does anyone experiencing problems uploading a photo?

I want to do that, but once it start to upload at a certain percentage

the system gave me two type of errors (not in this order):

the first one is something concerning file saved with PS7, (but I

don't think so, because I use PS CS and I've followed some tips from

    the forum)

the second one is problem with the server.

I tought it was my laptop, but after tried with other three different

pc, I relize it's not my pc bad.

So has anyone the same problem?

    thanks,

    Vince
