MY CONCLUSIONS/OBSERVATIONS AND QUESTIONS:
Currently 5D + Battery Grip (grip is a must for me) and 1DmkIIN have almost the
same price - I mean the difference is not that significant in this category.
Which camera do you find doing better job for you? My question applies mostly
to wedding shooters but not only. General miscellaneous applications also
included.
The 5D's biggest "plus" is resolution. FF is not so important to me (I think
so). I've had a chance to take a few shots with 5D and compared them to my
30D's images and general image quality seems to be the same - 30D makes
beautiful pictures. Of course the resolution of 5D is definitely better, but I
so rarely make prints larger than 13x19. What I also notiCed is that 5D's files
are huge what requires extra costs on CF cards and PC hard drives. I have a
feeling that it takes more time to process 5D's images for the applications
like Photoshop. So looks like 5D requires next investment - top speed computer,
especially when you need to process hundreds of images per event.
1DmkIIN? - Hmmm! A dream camera. However, I don't need the weather sealing. I
would buy this camera for its features. The question is: Does it operate really
better than 30D? As I know IQ of both cameras are the same. From time to time I
hear that 1DmkIIN is not that sharp. Is it true?
BTW, does 1DmkIIN with flash/ETTL operations work any better than 30D?
Please share your experience.
Thank you,
Linda

As I know, most of airshow or birds shooters use AI Servo mode on camera. What
about lens? In what position is your IS switch?
For example, 70-200 f/2.8 L lens needs (+/-) 0.5 sec. to lock its stabilizer.
Does it cooperate with AI Servo? Is this combination possible? If not, I don't
find any advantage of IS on any tele-lens (when shooting moving objects).
Could anyone please explain this to me?

Thank you, guys.
Jason, the link you sent is btriliant to me. Indeed the tube seems to be broken.
I just don't know where I can buy the tube. Any ideas?
Thanks again,

Last weekend my 550EX hit the ground. Everything operates except
firing. It zooms, LCD backlight is ok, it just doesn't fire.
Do I have to buy a new gun? Any chance for fixing this?
The flash is 3 years old, so no warranty applies.
Thanks for help,
Linda

Do you use any portable devices? Do you trust them?
What brand/model would you recommend? Adorama and B&H show different
hard drives - really cheap and really expensive. What to choose? Is
LCD a good option or wasting money?
I will appreciate your comments/opinions. Linda

When you attach any EF-S lens to a 10/20D body, do you calculate crop
factor? For example, when you have 10-22mm EF-S lens on your camera,
is 10-22mm a real focal length range (like on 35mm body)? Or is it 16-
35.2mm?
Thanks - Linda

Thank you for help. It seems to be clear now.

As I know every rechargeable AA battery has lower voltage (1.2).
Probably it would charge flash slower, but I wonder if it will lower
the flashlight quality. Does it matter?

As I heard Canon TC 1.4x is fair, but TC 2x is not too good.
What is better: 70-200 f2.8/f4 L + TC (1.4x/2x) or 100-400 L? Which
solution could give better image quality? Did you have a chance to
compare them? How about Sigma 100-300 f4?
Thanks for any advice,
Linda

Sometimes I want to take portrait close-up shots (e.g. eye, mouth). I
have Sigma 50mm macro lens but I need to be very, very close to an
object to shoot what I really want. Longer focal length macro lenses
are expensive. Therefore I think about buying some extension tube and
attach it to my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L or 70-200 f/4 L lenses. Will I
have nice results with these two lenses and extension tube? BTW, I
have film cameras, but mostly work with 10D.

I bought an used softbox and noticed (just at home) that the diffuser
is yellowish instead of pure white. Can it be useful or I just wasted
my money? Can I use any other material/fabric instead?
Thanks for advice,
Linda

Thank you very much. I will have to think about it and about all the situation and condition I will work with the lens.

Hello everyone,
Have you worked with Sigma 100-300 f/4 lens? Could you tell anything
about image quality?
I am comparing it to Canon 70-200 f/4. I know that focal lengths
dont match, however they seem to be the same class. If I have Canon
70-200 and Sigma 70-200 I would go Canon. But when the Sigma 100-300
appears I hesitate. Sigma is up to 300mm (collar included), but Canon
is Canon.
Hmmm...

Hello,
Do you have any experience with Photek softlighter umbrella with
diffuser? Does it really work like a softbox? Is the light even and
soft as it should be? How many f-stops do you lose because of this
combination?
Thanks, Linda

I posted this question to EOS forum, but I think this is the right
place.
I have a chance to photograph furniture mostly couches and sofas. I
am experienced in portraits but not in furniture/commercial. Please
help.
1. Could you tell me how to set the lighting? How many lights do I
need? Are umbrellas OK? Bounced or through? Do you know any links?
2. How to show the texture, type of material?
3. Is 50mm f/1.8 lens good for this? This is the only fix focal I
have.
4. Is 10D good for this type of commercial photography? I think I can
expect real natural colors, but am afraid of the sharpness. Would
35mm camera be better?
5. Any other tips?
Also I am afraid that USM could lower overall quality. Actually, the
pictured will be used for catalog not for enlargements, so maybe post
processing wont be needed. What do you think? FYI, each item will be
photographed separately (and then cut off the background in PS).
Thank you, Linda

Which memory card would you recommend for 10D (and mostly weddings)?
Did you find and test any good and cheap cards? Is 40x a must? How
about brand? I know that Lexar is good. But if you know anything
cheaper and equally good please let me know.
I think that size of the card depends on the photographer preferences.

Thank you Gerry. Actually, I have one more question. You say that partial metering should be better than matrix. But what if I want the background to be nicely exposed. Id like the camera to be inteligent and see and expose properly both main object and a background. Can 10D do this?
Thanks, Linda
-
10D has 7 focusing points. Right? Does the partial metering work
around the center focusing point no matter which one is active? Or
does it cover any active focusing point?
Thanks,
Linda

Gerry, Steve and everyone
You recommend 50mm f/1.4 lens. I have one but f/1.8. Is it good enough?

What is better (wedding/general) tool: 5D or 1DmkIIN?

Well, your comments are very interesting and different. Bognad's point of view seems to be very logical and closer to mine. I have two questions:
First one for 5D owners: You say that 5D's images are awesome. OK, I agree. Indeed I was impressed when I looked at the monitor and could enlarge the details. BUT, what is it needed for when clients so rarely order prints larger than 8x10/11x14? I understand that it is awesome for you and myself, BUT is it AWESOME 'for pictures (4x6-11x14)'? Is there any real difference in quality of your prints in this size range?
Second question for Bogdan/other 1DmnII(N) owners: OK, I realized that generally I don't need weather sealing and I don't need buffer of 1D level. I think I may need the multispot metering occasionally (however I don't know how it works, actually). I can say that the most important for me would be the AF and general responsivness. BUT, is just the AF worth such a huge money over the 30D? What is it exaclty in 1DmkIIN worth the upgrade from 30D in your opinion? (As I mentioned I don't need weather sealing or buffer).
OK, I have $3,000+ to spend. Should I buy 1DmkIIN(5D?), or just wait a few months for any news from Canon? Eventually buy some new lenses instead?
