<p>For places I have just been this summer: Sand Diego and San Francisco certainly for reasons already stated. LA I would not by flying to the International airport as the city is so big that I would not do it for one day.<br>
Other suggestion: Las Vegas; Monterey (with bus service from the airport)</p>

JDM, I shoud have better worded the question: I talk only about hiking not rafting on the river, and indeed the idea is what have you managed to bring back up the canyon and that was nevertheless usefull when using.</p>

I use a Nikon D200, 18-70 Nikkor, and 50-150 and 70-300 Sigma lenses.<br>
I'm talking about hiking during several hours, during a day hike. Having spend there 3 summer weeks, twice, in 2007 and 2008, I am familiar with the conditions in these parks during the summer period.</p>

The equipment is easily accessible, it is of strong construction and is well padded</p>

<p>As Jeff suggested, go to Utah. You can probably go to Zion AND Bryce during those three days. It can go like that:<br>
1rst Day: Drive from LV to Zion, check-in in the afternoon in a motel near the intrance of the park. Visit of the park until the evening; back to motel.<br>
2nd Day: Visit Zion; do the hike up to the narrows, and a little inside these Narrows. In the afternoon, ride to Bryce and chek in motel (Ruby's at the entrance of the park). First tour in Bryce.<br>
3rd Day: Morning visit to Bryce. In the afternoon back to Vegas.</p>
<p>I visited parks in Utah and Ariz. last summer, starting from Las Vegas, so I am pretty sure of the possible timing.</p>

<p>We went (me, my wife and 3 sons (11 to 13) last August to the North Rim. The nicest think is to go down hiking, but be careful not to go down to far. Bob's suggestion to count 2 hours of climbing for 1 hour of walk down seems to me optimistic. This is especially true for people like you and me living at sea level: you definitely feel the effect of thin air at that altitude. Count at least 3 hours up for 1 hour down: so you can plan for 1 hour down and 3 hours down that would allow for a 4 hours hike. And take enough water with you, and plan how you are going to carry that water</p>

<p>On the D200, you can choose in the bracketing menu which parameter(s) you want to vary in a bracketing sequence: shutter speed, aperture or both. If you choose varying aperture only, you have exactly the function you want, that is changing the depth of field and automatically adapting the shutter speed.</p>

The problem is that if buying new, the price for a Nikon D80 body is around $600 on the B&H web-site. This is the cheapest Nikon new body capable of using your old 75-300 lens. And you have to add the price for a 50 1.8 lens (a very good lens), which is $105 new; but if you want to keep the same angle of view as with you 50 on film, you need the Nikon 35 f2.0 (this is due to the crop factor) which cost around $300 new.
With a $500-600 budget, your best bet is probably buying on the used market on laces like Keh.com.

Sorry, if you mean the old 45 CL-4 (not the digital) you need the SCA 301 adapter with the SCA 300A cable. You can use only the Auto mode (no TTL)

Well Bob, I think that I will skip the idea allthogether. We will be in a rental car, and I would certainly hate being stuck there with my wife and three kids (aged 11 to 13).
We will go for the more classical visit to the North Kaibab trail and hike it down partially, being carefull not to go to far down and not beign able to come back during the same day.
As for the weather conditions and the amount of water to carry, we already were in Utah and Arizona this summer (2007)for 3 weeks and come back to see other places. We are thus well aware of that problem and that is certainly wise to take a lighter lens and a heavier amount of water !!

I plan a trip for next summer (in July 2008)to the north rim of the Grand
Canyon, starting from Kanab (Utah). On my map, there is a road from Fredonia to
Tuweep. As I understand most of this road is unpaved, but is it possible to
drive on this road up to the end with a normal car (in fact a mini-van) and not
with a 4x4.
I already imagine my photos taken at Toroweap Overlook, at least if I manage to
get there !!
