I don't know what kind of camera you got, but the only thing I could suggest you to have a "gorgeous" sky will be the Circular Polarizer.
I got one for my Pentax mz-s which is 35mm and I got another one with a conversion lens adapter for my digital canon powershot A70. It give a wonderful blue/kinda 3d sky.

I like this one, with the three "zones". It is possible to see a distinct foreground, middle ground, and background. Just love the "eternal snow" on top of the mountain :)

I want to see a real outrageous photography with someone wounded or dead. Almost a great shot ;)
