Can't compare the 3 but I recently got the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 which I am very happy with (the first 3rd party lens I've purchased) and it does come with a hood and a case which the Canon one doesn't. The only downside is the 82mm filter size which is expensive when it comes to polarising filters.

Look into a filter system like Cokin. You only need adapters to fit the different lenses.

Hey Doc, I've checked out many shots made by the 35 and 5D on Flickr. That's why I got so excited about using it on a film camera.
Problem is that the 5D shots look a heck of a lot better those on film!
Thanks for the link.

The Elan 7 is as quiet as the EOS 3 is loud. My EOS 3 is in my closet also. It has a problem with the mirror moving out of the way (mirror take up motor?) to make the exposure and gives the dreaded bc error.

Anybody know how to fix it?

I'd take them all down, and move on. Get some new photos and life.

I picked up a couple of EOS film cameras recently, and wish I could just put on one an ef-s lens. I bought my first Canon in 2005 when the 20D was out, and figured I would have no need for anything full frame.

I feel just a little lucky now in that the only Ef-S lenses I have are the 18-55 which came on two bodies, and for some reason I bought the 18-55 IS when it first came out. I also bought the 10-20mm lens and really like it when I need really wide angle. Even at 1.6x the wide side is 16mm, and currently the widest FF lens I have is a 21mm Leica thread mount which I consider pretty wide.

So I would say choose your lenses wisely. Look at one of those sites which let you actually see what a scene looks like with a particular lens and body. As was said above the only EF-S lens you may need could be an extreme wide, but then maybe not.

Thanks for the input. You all (along with reading reviews) have given something to really think about.
I already have a 50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8, 28-135, and an L tele zoom so I might be set for all focal lengths that I really need. I also have a DSLR with a few EF-S zoom lenses that have me thinking that a cheap EF mount zoom just might be "good enough".
I figured I could grab a prime lens for a bit more than than the 50.

Thanks

Been thinking about an (inexpensive) wide angle prime to use on a film Canon. Anybody using these?
I'm thinking 35/2 or one of the 28mm lenses. I've been seeing used 35/2 on FS boards that go pretty quickly, at almost new prices.
They seem just a little expensive for what they are. Anybody here using them (now)?
Please shed some light.

What does calibrate the lens mean? I've been seeing that expression a lot lately.

I did have an experience with a Canon lens missing focus which was disappointing. I was doing a group shot, one row of people. I focused on the bodies of the people, not head, using the center point. When I pulled up the image I thought, wow pretty soft. But I noticed the focus was on the wall many feet behind the group.

How about a custom made lens turret?

Yeah, not too many new threads these days.
I agree with the economy theory. What about "death of film" (-; ?
I wouldn't want to put several hundreds of dollars into another film camera right now.
Could really go for one of those shiny new M9s though; maybe if the DOW claws its way back to 14,000.

What do I think about the choice between 7D and 5DII? I'd take either, but there are many "featured" photographers in publications that cater to pros who use 5DIIs.

I bet they could give a really good explanation.

I bought an Elan 7e for $50. You can get other EOS film cameras for much less than that now.

And I just bought one of these cameras. )-:

I like your blog. The photos are exciting.

"There are Canon cameras that are less expensive, more versatile, and have a "silent mode.""

What evidence do you have of that?

Maybe a place for Leica?

Next time try a quiet Leica.

Owing a Leica M is a lot like owning a classic sports car. It's not practical for many things and might not keep up with the latest and greatest when it comes to pure image quality.

And some of those flagship dslrs reminds one of the ubiquitous family van; new, practical and extremely large. It would be hard to take a family of 7 from Ohio to Florida in a sleek little sports car, right. And it's just as silly driving some big honking van while trying to tool around a little village.

But then I see women driving these things everywhere ... possibly because that's all the family has?

Forget all that comparison, pro/con list stuff. I've come to the conclusion that the people who buy Leicas do it for the simple reason of wanting a Leica and whatever it is that goes with owning and using them.
Also, people who have Leicas or RFs usually have and use other cameras. Many times MANY other cameras in different formats.

I usually google the battery model number or the model of the camera. You'll get several hits on google. many times I will search the battery on eBay.

From google search of digital camera batteries.
Good luck

The only reason anyone ever bought a Canon is because the store was probably sold out of Nikon.

So, we've found the dork. Just waiting for the nerd.....

C-V-N discussions. Like watching dorks arguing with nerds as to who has the best techniques to pick up girls.

Thanks Jim, I am going for another Elan 7e. One bad apple ...

addendum ... Do you think a 7ne, I think that is the model, is worth $199? I saw one on a mail order website. I think it has a back lit LCD and maybe other upgrades. Seems a little on the high side to me.

Should I choose M5 over M6?
