  1. Marc G. I am sure that asking a specific question does not automatically get a reply. It does let the viewer know that you are looking to improve and not just looking for compliments. Unless a photo really impresses me I will only comment or suggest improvement if a question is asked or I am familiar with the photographer and know they are open to opinions. I believe others are probably similarly inclined, so you would increase, though not guarantee, responses on your photos by asking a specific question.
  2. IMO the lack of critiques is mostly due to the lack of a specific question from the requester. If someone asks a question that I know the answer to I will respond even if the photo doesn't interest me. Look at the critique request forum and you will be hard pressed to find five legitimate questions. Most just say "comments welcome".
  3. Don't know if my two cents is helpful or needed at this point, but most printers that I know of are using sRGB. This is a smaller color space than Adobe1998 and you should switch to that colorspace and check for any out of gamut warnings before sending your file to the printer. It would seem to me that if the printer is using a smaller color space than you are, then the printer is only guessing what you want that color to be and you won't always be happy with the result.
  4. Until you callibrate monitor and printer you get used to compensating for the difference between what your eye sees on the monitor and the results from your printer. Long term you will be happier if you callibrate monitor and printer. You will also be happier if you download printer profiles for specific papers. If you do all this then don't use the "colorsync" option in color management. Use "no color adjustment" and trust that the profiles and callibration will give you the right results. John.
  5. You have a lifetime of questions in a relatively short space here. Edward gave you some good tips, though he misread the 1200 dpi printer as an epson 1200 printer. For printing I like to use at least 1440 dpi and many people recommend using 2880 dpi (I use an epson 2200 printer). Also I like to use the "print with preview" feature in photoshop to select profiles, dpi, paper, and print color adjustments.

I prefer not to use the auto adjust features in photoshop. Instead I use layers, new adjustment layer and adjust either levels, color or hue & saturation. You also didn't mention the type of file you are using, but if you are using a "jpg" file you should save it as a photoshop file so that you are working with the software's preferred file type and a non-lossy file type. Hopefully others, more knowledgeable than I, will chip in or you should consider a course in digital processing. Good Luck.

  6. I have also been battling color casts. When using a profile from Epson the "no colour management" works best. If I am not using a profile then I use "color sync" to get the best results. The profiles I use are on the Epson website. I also print at 1440, instead of 2880 as the 2880 is slower and occasionally results yielded stripes on the finished photo, don't know why, but switching to 1440 fixed it. Good Luck.
  7. Jacques stated that he would join my "club". I don't want to mislead anyone, I am not thinking about a club, more a subscriber level that pledges to give and receive honest opinions and agrees to civilly discuss differences of opinion. Rants would get the symbol removed from beside your name. I don't know about the rest of you, but I really don't care about the number of comments or rates, just that it is someone's honest opinion and if I can give an honest opinion without having to deal with being attacked for my opinion I will comment more freely. Does this idea have any merit? Would you be more willing to give an honest opinion if you knew the photographer would be receptive to your ideas? (He/She might disagree, but wothout trashing you) How about feedback from a moderator, is this something that would be possible?
  8. Perhaps the site could put a symbol by subscribers names for those that take a pledge to be thick skinned and not retaliate for critiques that may be negative (but not abusive). If the subscriber retaliates then the symbol would be removed by the moderators. This would allow those of us that attempt to give helpful critique a little more assurance that we won't be "ranted" at for expressing an opinion. Not sure whether or not this would be successful, but it might not be difficult to implement. The symbol could be next to the subscriber symbol so it would be easy to view in the critique forum.
  9. Sounds like you are trying to get more out of the scene than the conditions are allowing given the mechanical restraints of photography. Personally I would meter the blue sky 60 to 90 degrees away from the sun and then bracket 1 stop either side of my reading using apertures between f-11 and f-16 to keep DOF and reduce lens flare issues. Good Luck.
  10. Moose alley in northern NH. Just find Pittsburg or Colebrook NH on the map and ask when you get there. I believe they have moose tours as well. However your best bet with enough light to photograph would be a zoo. Moose can be very fickle about where you want them to pose.
  11. Just a guess, but the date you upload the photo seems to count as the day entered, not the day you request a critique. If your photos were entered more than three days ago try uploading a new photo and immediately request a critique or search for a longer time period than three days.
  12. Have to agree with Mike and Bob, you need a back-up camera and a tripod. Plenty of plastic bags to keep things dry. And if you go with film for back-up, don't check the film in your baggage. Always take your film as a carry on item. Sounds like a great experience, enjoy.
  13. Brian,

This definitely works well. Shows the photos that considered best

rated instead of most rated. I think this will improve the site for

the average viewer (i.e. hobbyists, like myself, that want to learn

from and help others) I appreciate all your work to improve the site.

  14. I think there are quite a few of us in the same boat. Last response I saw from Brian on this was that he hadn't been to the PO Box for some time to pick up mail. I am waiting to see if my check was deposited then e-mailing Brian if it has cleared and I still don't show as a member.
