It's really unfortunate that Adobe got so aggressive with the .CR2's, I am shooting with a 1D Mark III and can really see the effect. While the noise is gone the image is a bit clunky.
It certainly not the camera and its not yet a deal breaker as I love LR 1.1 but I sure do hope adobe tones things down a bit of the algorithm.

Bob thanks to you and all of the others who keep this site running. My only request is a better forum interface the current one is circa 1996. Even good posts die quickly because they are bumped down the list and a a user cannot easily see active posts versus ones that are dead.

In regard to the ST-E2 in manual mode I should have made clear that I meant on the 580ex you can control the power settings of each of the slaves 1/1 to 1/128 directly from the master. This cannot be done on the ST-E2.
Also in regard to the 420ex... I own a 580ex, a 430ex and a 420ex and want nothing more then to replace my 420ex with another 430ex. Why? Because it requires you use fully automatic ETTL on everything. Don't get me wrong you can do a lot with the 420 using ETTL especially as a group C background flash (can't use group C on the St-E2) but the more you use the off camera flashes the more you will find your self really wanting manual mode for creative work.
I am not doing anything until after PMA to see what new products Canon introduces and if you can wait a month would recommend you do the same
but if not pick a few 430ex and use them with the 580ex.

I love my Canon 50 f1.8, and find that I use it all the time even with "better" lenses in my bag. I regularly get tack sharp images from it so my guess is that something is wrong with yours.

Does anyone know the answer to Bob's question, that would be a big turn off as I am not a big fan of big brother know everything I do.

Depending on what happens at PMA this year Canon is in for a run for its money with some of the other folks in the market. The only thing Canon has giving itself a leg up is Full Frame on the 5D and 1DsMkii. Nikon and know even Pentax offer some very comparable cameras with some very nice bells and whistles which become more important and we being to top out on MegaPixels.

Check out strobist www.strobist.com or even more so the strobist group on flickr for lots of good info on this subject.

Yep no group C with the Canon ST-E2 nor do you have the ability to wireless control the 580 and 430 in manual mode. The ST-E2 has been around for awhile and I am guessing we might see a replacement soon that takes advantage of some of the features found in the 580ex, at least thats what I am holding out for. PMA is next month.

I personally wouldn't think of shooting anything on a camera except RAW but I understand JPEG has its value for some. With weddings there are no second takes you either get the shot or you don't. Shooting in RAW gives you a much greater chance of saving a bad capture then JPEG does and I would consider it a requirement.
<p>
I used to used Capture One, and then ACR for a little while, but now I am hooked on Adobe Lightroom. This will lily be the industry standard in a few years for workflow so you might start now.

Some of the rumors have Canon releasing a 24-70 2.8L IS at PMA so you might want to hold off...

I spent the weekend shooting with this combo and found the 420 is best as background or hair. You can dial in a a +/- 3 EC on the 580ex for group C so it gives you a bit of control. The wireless is working great even outside in the sun, but would still love to go manual with the 420.

Yep I have been watching Strobist for a while... lots of good info.
Personally I would rather shoot with the canon wireless ystem in Manuel mode all controlled by the 580ex but with a 420ex in the mix I am forced into ETTL-II. My experiments have shown good results once you figure out the ratios and how to depower group C. Controlling everything from the Master is awesome but I will add another 430 to the mix when I can.
-
That's pretty much what I am trying to figure out as well. If it fired on full power you could at least predict and get consistent results if on TTL it would be a lot less predicable.

For various reasons my flash inventory has expanded to now include a 580ex and
430ex plus my existing 420ex. I have an okay understanding (ie: I've read a bit
but have little practice) of studio lighting techniques. But am struggling with
the best way to incorporate the 420ex into a portrait situation. Obviously the
580ex will serve as the master and fill, I would likely then use one light to
shoot into an umbrella or a the subject from the side. The third light I imagine
I will use to light the background.
The major question (however all input is appreciated) is where best to
incorporate the 420ex since it does not have a manual function and has to be
shot with ETTL wireless.
Thanks

Adobe Lightroom will do all you need and more and is free for the time being while it is still in Beta (current build valid until 2/27/06).

I just purchased a 6x8 and returned it the same day in favor of the 6x11 since I use dual monitors. If you use a single screen go with the 6x8.

To the the best results with the Ilford paper you need to use their profiles and can not use the Advanced B&W mode, let photoshop control the colors. If you want to use the Epson driver use the semigloss paper setting.
-
Try using a photo filter adjustment layer on a B&W image.

You can get away with a one level increase in ACR without any problem. If you are doing big increase do it in PS, but you might try Bicubic Sharper, adobe has recommend bicubic smoother but I know of many experts who take 6mp pics to full size posters and swear by Bicubic Sharper compared to Bicubic Smoother.

A "Threshold Adjustment Layer" would be the easiest way to this. Just add the layer get the range you want viable click OK and then Control/Command click on the layer thumbnail to get the selection (select inverse if you need the opposite).

There are lots of different ways depending on what look you want. Check search for "borders" on planetphotoshop.com or check out PS TV at photoshoptv.com they have done a number of features on how to do sloppy borders.

You can really add a lot of color punch using LAB and "Apply Image" or Curves. But where I find the real power is ablity to apply sharpening to just the Lightness Channel (where the details reside) and not the A&B channels (where the color resides), you end up with the ablity to get more sharpening without color haols then you can in RGB. Also using the "shawdow/highlight" adjustment on just the Lightness Channel often gives more realistic results because it does not not change the color tone of an image.
Everybody has there own ways to get often similar results, for me LAB has become a important part of my workflow.
I'll try to find an image that really benefited from LAB and post it here.
You might also check out PhotoshopTV they have recently been doing a number of LAB techniques and if you attend any of Scott Kelby's seminars you will find that he swears by the using Apply Image in LAB on every picture he takes.
