I cant say enough good things about the 50mm 1.8. It is the sharpest lens I have and I used it a lot with film.
However on the DX frame format my 24 mm 2.8 works better (wider perspective).
And for portraits my 85mm 1.8 gives me a much more pleasing look. So if I had to do it all over again..for the DX format I would think twice before getting the 50mm.

I like to see people upgrading to the next best thing (is that the d200/d80 now?) Its lets me get a used D50 thats perfectly adequate for a more than reasonable price ($375 used).
Nikon D90 but need inputs regarding Nikkor Lenses.

I have an old 35-70 f2.8. Its very sharp and cheap (< $300 used). The limited range can be an issue though.
Perhaps you could start with a quality lens like that and then decide.
