I am a beginner in photography.
I have recently acquired a 35 mm SLR camera Olumpus L-20 28-110mm.
I have been experimenting a lot with different aperture sizes and
have repeatedly got pictures with poor sharpness using wider
apertures like f/8 and f/11. I used these during a particularly
cloudy day for shooting in the outdoors. For most pictures, where the
subjects (flowers) have been as close as a meter away and where I had
assessed the focus through the viewfinder, the sharpness of the main
subject was poor. I have used a tripod in all my pictures and a
ISO100 Fujifilm. I had basically exhausted the full roll and not one
picture showed up well. Could anyone please explain what could be
going wrong?

Thanks a lot for the help.
My pictures have improved dramatically after having set the apertures at f/16 and f/22. Thanks for the advice. The shutter speed is controlled automatically in this camera so I did not have to worry much about that.
One thing still beats me. When do you effectively use apertures like f/8 and f/11 (on a 28 mm lens)?
Thanks much in advance
