  1. I pulled the family XA out of retirement a week or so ago, and noticed the red 3m mark too--I assumed it was the hyperfocal distance. The manual is silent about that, but the depth of field table tends to confirm that guess.

    Set at 3m, "circle of least confusion 1/30mm" is between 1.31m and infinity at f16. Check the pic for the rest of the table.<div>006Ie4-14968184.jpg.0a05812ac085751ff5af47fff0f99405.jpg</div>

  2. Your URL seems to be pointing to something like this:

    file:///C:/Program%20Files/Jasc%20Software%20Inc/Photos/Olympus%20C3040Z/Agfa%20folders/Isolette/P1010010a.jpg

    The URL should appear (to us, out on the Internet) more like this:

    http://www.photo.net/image.gif

    If you're putting in your own HTML, try something like this:

    <img src="/directory/subdir/filename.gif">

    if the file is on the Photo.net server; else

    <img src="http://www.example.net/directory/subdir/filename.gif">

    if the file is on some other server (in this case, "example.net").

    Or something. Right now it looks as if you're pointing us all to your personal PC, when you really want to have those files up on a web server somewhere and point us to them there.

    Hope this helps...

  3. The Zarya is, apparently, a LTM camera with only a viewfinder. The advantage, of course, being less weight and less complexity (no worries about rangefinder inaccuracies). Anyone have any experience with this one?

    Of course, my Bessa L serves roughly the same purpose, as long as I'm able to more or less get the framing right without a proper viewfinder. I dug up a Kalimar VF for the 35/80 mm accessory lenses sold for Yashica RFs, so if that works I can save myself a few bucks.

  4. Has this been done before? Probably.

    am I crazy? Probably not.

    This kind of thing just popped up on the vintage camera area, in reference to the "best 35mm folder" where the answer is "any 120 folder" in which you can jam a 35mm cannister.

    IMO, the coolest thing would be to stretch the 35mm film in 5 inch segments across the entire 4x5 film holder. Probably need something to hold them all flat(ish).

    Or wait. How about cutting a roll of film into a negative storage sheet, sticking that into an 8x10 holder (11x14?) and shooting an entire roll at once?

    Can't wait to see the results!

  5. Andre raises an intriguing, parallel, question: what are the best/most interesting and CHEAP options for LTM lenses?

    It would be a lot easier to justify spending $250 for a Bessa R if I could fill out the lens bag for under $100. And yes, I realize that I should cheap out on the camera not the lenses. But anything under 50mm I can stick on my Bessa L body for nothing and guesstimate focus (right?).

  6. I just got back my first roll of 35mm film run through my Perkeo II. It was before I fixed the light leak, so there's serious funkiness with the color and exposure in general, but otherwise I'm astonished and intrigued with how well things turned out. Here's the first (cruddy) scan. I was planning on trying to come up with some kind of retrofit to make the film go through nicely, but don't see the need. And the Perkeo film advance worked like a charm, too.<div>0068om-14705184.jpg.3a4cd5269f5ceafaa7809cb00692c6b2.jpg</div>
  7. TLR = Twin Lens Reflex

    $100 for a light meter seems kind of high.

    Weston Masters of various types and shapes seem to pop up on the famous auction website, regularly going for $10 or so. If memory serves, I paid about $15 for a reliable one from a reliable eBay seller last year. Just checked it against my digital today in low light as well as bright overcast, and it seemed to be as accurate as necessary.<div>0068Lf-14690784.jpg.e4ae06d8c9c5710d4e9a7db37943ff1a.jpg</div>

  8. Around Boston, there's the Photographica show twice a year. I got a real nice Zeiss Ikonta (6x9, 105mm f3.5 Tessar) there about 15 years ago that I never should have sold.

    The auction site can be good for bargains if you become totally obsessive about it. I got a mint Super Isolette for $200 a year or so ago on a "buy it now" (they're going for $400 and up now, when they come up--I think someone may have mis-priced it). Also, my Perkeo II was another buy it now bargain, going for way too little ($75 maybe?) and it included a complete filter/lens hood kit plus minty leather cases for all.

    OTOH, you want the "best", you'll have to pay. Do a search on completed items with "bessa" in title, and you'll see the range. A Bessa II with APO Lanthar lens went for over $2,500; what looked to be a reasonably nice Bessa II w/Heliar went for $465. With a Skopar, the price drops a hundred bucks or so.

    But the real bargain is the $50 Bessa I w/Vaskar. You get a lightweight 6x9 folder with little that can break (no RF), and you can make some pretty nice pictures with it.

    Sure, I'd love to have the Bessa II w/APO Lanthar, but I'd probably never use it to take pictures.<div>0067Xv-14668684.jpg.dc09fb78392c682020a26d9cbdaa5a67.jpg</div>

  9. <P>I'm still learning about scanning; the b/w negs were also very thin (I could use some practice on exposure, too, after only 40 years or so taking pics I still try to get away with too little light). Anyway, those b/w scans were from prints, I believe.

    <p>Here's another shot with the same lens, but in color (neg) and scanned from the print.<div>0067Lp-14662984.jpg.897fffe0b1dc7a74a7b9025dfc662263.jpg</div>

  10. <p>film/dev: not sure, probably Ilford XP-2 (?). Dropped off with the local pro camera shop's minilab.

    <p>The first shot, I was probably a meter or so away; the second, possibly half a meter.

    <p>It's an amazing lens, IMO, considering speed/DoF/weight as well as price. Also, really a lot of fun for "tricky" shots (e.g., there's the one where my hand reaches into the frame and "grabs" my kid).
