I had the same problem happening to my srt. It appears to be a problem in the shutter-release-cycle (in that camera, when you push the shutter, it doesn't all happen at once, but rather step by step), when one part doesn't move fast enough to trigger the next ir to complete th shutter cycle. this is mostly due to dried out parts, so a cla (clean, lube, adjust - done by repair shops) would help. such a cla on the other hand might be much more expesive than getting another used srt off e..y or a camera store.
If you're in a mood, you might as well take your camera apart and try t lube it yourself (This is not a simple task, you cannot just spill oil all over the camera), but that might carry the risk of ruining christmas...
I forgot: sometimes it's possible to un-jam it by pressing the shutter butten, while advancing the rewind crank several times, but if the camera is completely locked this should be impossible as well.
My advice: Go on the big auction site or a camera trade show and get a nice, serviced srt, which then will serve you or your father for the years to come...
