Got a new 9000 ED and installed the newest version of Nikon Scan on my Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. It seemed to work fine out of the box, but I went ahead and installed the above driver and that works fine too. So far I've only run a half dozen scans, but it works quite well!
Thanks Steve for the driver and Alex, I followed your checklist too.
I did download the latest version of SilverFast and was impressed that I could pick my film type and it did change the appearance of the scan. But I actually thought the NikonScan did a better job in preserving shadow details. And I'm really not impressed with the Silverfast price tag!

Ben Goren - the 35mm f/1.4 is a dream, my favorite prime lens. Fast and accurate autofocus and low light capability. Get one!
I'd like to add a tilt/shift to my kit...

Allard - thanks for the Barnack recommendation. I've downloaded it and it helps understand the limitations of using a shallow DOF in regards to where the focus will be. I've had some rough results with my 50D shooting at f/1.4, and now see why. I've been repositioning like missy and the DOF is only a few inches so the reposition is killing the point of focus.
My quest for sharpness will be achieved through:

Better Technique

F/8 (it's fate, no?)

And Higher ISO

Thanks to all (the question and all the fine answers!)

I have the 50D and also bought the EF-D grid. It was really easy to take out the stock focus screen and install the new one on the camera. I have used it and it seems to have helped! The other suggestion is to just shoot at a 45degree angle. Horizon a little off = problem; horizon way off = art : )

I'm originally from the US and have pronounced it as Nigh-konn as well... silly me. In NZ, I've heard it as Nick-onn.

Tell Josh what YOU would have done with his $800....

Hey Josh,
You reminded my that I have a Canon 18-135mm IS that came with my 7D kit, with hood. I haven't used it but once. If yoiu name your price... and I'll give you no interest payments with none due for a month!
Sorry to here about Old Faithful, but maybe some good will come outa it. Like energy savings with the new unit. Or an 18-135...
